Different Styles, Indifferent Ways
I’ve been thinking a lot this past few weeks, trying to understand why I am unable to write the words I want to on my novel, why I have not started to work on my short story properly and why my painting is still untouched. Then it occurred to me -I must be suffering from Gauguin’s syndrome, confused? Let me explain…
Sometime last year (with a good mate of mine) I visited an exhibition by Paul Gauguin which was hosted at the Tate Modern. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience -yes, it was overcrowded and at some point it was quite stuffy but I digress. Whilst viewing the paintings it surprised me to see Gauguin had struggled to find his own style until quite late in his years. I was bemused to note that he attempted to work by adopting styles of the various impressionists (composition being the area he deliberately challenged) and he also tried very hard to incorporate lots of colours in his paintings which I found did not work for him but eventually he came to his own and his paintings in his later years shows that he learnt from his peers and became the artist we appreciate today.
Here’s an example where his style mimics Paul Cezanne‘s very closely (the first painting is the work of Cezanne and the painting below is Gauguin’s -see the resemblance in style?):
ROWed Under -it’s been Difficult…
I should have updated my ROW80 page yesterday and posted it as a fabulous update on the ROW80 linky list; but I couldn’t, my heart was not in it -nor is it today; but I owe you guys some form of noise, so I will babble about what’s been going on (well, I’ll try)…
I was trying to find a balance between my inner and outer world -AKA as my writing and my world outside of writing; the two parts of me are not gelling as well as I hoped it would. When one goes well, the other is neglected for a while; then when one goes from bad to worse the other becomes non-existent as the guilt for messing up riddles me with many holes which I find difficult to heal.

‘Alo-ween to y’all NaNoWriMo’s with a Blah-Blogging and an Ominous MIA Attempt…
Monday’s (Muwahahahahaaaaaa) Meandering Muse:
An ‘appy ‘Alooo-weeeen to you-aaaaaaaaaallllllllllll… Muwahahahahaaaaaa. Halloween’s been and nearly gone in the UK (it’s not that huge over in my part of the woods, so there are no interesting ghoulish stories to tell); besides I’m not a huge Halloween follower (my stories say otherwise I know!). However; this year, to mark the occasion, I managed to write one spooky story Sarahann’s Warning; this I have decided to enter into a competition. Haley Whitehall devised a Horror Flash Fiction Contest -seeing Haley introduced me to Flash Fictions, it’s only fitting that I should enter this competition -so I did. Please pop over to Haley’s blog and check out the other entries too.

A Fun Game – In Your Head (Part Three)
Frivolous Fun Friday:
I cannot believe I forgot today was Friday! How ditzy of me! (This is the reason why today’s blog post has just materialized!) It’s been a hectic (and fun) week spending quality time with my lovely family -unfortunately the head cold/flu I have been suffering from has not helped me to think clearly for my regular writing sprints (a fuzzy brain comes to mind). Fortunately I am getting better -therefore, I am hoping the next few days I will get back to normal (whatever normal may be). Being out of sync is just a weird-out-of-body experience, don’t you think? Have you ever had moments like that and just found it too difficult to concentrate and make sense of things? How did you resolve the setbacks (if any)? Whilst I leave you to ponder on that, I think it’s best that I do not waste any more valuable time and go straight onto today’s post.
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
Let the Fun Game In Your Head Begin…
It is now exactly one month since we embarked on this mind game and I am hoping all the participants have had fun *looks up expectantly* -I am actually intrigued on how they tackled the task at hand and if my theory has worked *prays*
In short: Today is part three of the game I devised four weeks ago; if you still do not know what it is all about then head on over to this post. Now comes the fun part, Billie Jo Woods, CM Stewart and Cynthia all stood up to the unusual challenge. They were required to create a character(s) profile and write a 200-300 word dialogue within the guidelines I set out in part one of this game (see the details below). In part two, I asked them to email the character(s) profile they created to one of the participants (names selected out of a hat by me); with the character(s) profile(s) they received they had to write another 200-300 word dialogue (again meeting the same requirements as mentioned below).
Setting: A small quiet village approx 200 miles from the nearest city adorned with thatched cottages and surrounded by vast empty fields. Not much happens here, except for their festival –the festival of colour, this happens once a year; tourists and families from afar visit, no one misses this event. This is the highlight of the year for the villagers; they prepare for this the whole year.
The Dialogue Prompts:
- No children live in the village.
- A child hides in a barn and stays after the festivities.
- Your character(s) interacts with the child.
- The child has a secret.
- Add a surprise of your own -in keeping with your character(s) profile.
Here’s a quick recap on my theory (just in case you have forgotten -I’ve quoted myself
):
It’s quite a simple theory if you really think about. I am inclined to think, -if and that’s a HUMANGOUS if; if our character(s) profiles are written with great care; if we build them like a real person, know their likes and dislikes etc and those random quirks they have, -then in ‘theory’ the voice of that character will not change much if another person writes from their POV (point of view). I mean, there might be the odd variation -and I don’t expect the dialogues to be identical, I just would like to believe that that voice would be easily identifiable as X character(s) voice than anyone’s else. We will now have a better idea now that we have reached the final stage of this game. We can now analyse and compare to see if my theory holds true or is just a random errand thought.
Now Comes the Fun Part: It’s the Grande Finale; therefore, participants (Billie Jo, Cynthia and Cynthia
) you can now share share share all that you have done on your blog and link it in the linky tool below. I’ll leave it up to you if you would like to write one blog post or several -the linky tool will be open for two weeks so that should give you enough time (if you need more time let me know). Please ensure you display your original (own) character(s) profile(s) and dialogues separate to the character(s) profile(s) you have received and written a dialogue accordingly to.
What’s Next? The next three frivolous Friday’ post I will collate the related character(s) profile(s) and dialogues (both the original and the second writers); we will then look at the similarities and differences and see if and why they differ. Billie Jo, Cynthia and Cynthia I would like to have insights from yourselves (I will email you shortly and explain my thoughts).
If you want to display these links on your blog, please feel free to get the InLinkz code here.
Should you have any questions or suggestions, please ask/let me below in the comment box or via the contact details below.
Before I forget, this game is for fun so sadly there are no prizes; but if it proves popular and there’s a demand for it to be played again in the future, I’ll keep a note and consider it then.
Have a fab-tastic Friday and a wondrous weekend. Keep that positivity-a-glowing and your smile forever shining -stay in peace.
A Tiny Note: This game is the final stage of the game; in two weeks (22/10/2011) we shall analyse the results and have a debate/discussion, so please feel free to pop by then and join in.

ROW80 Goals-A-Starting & NaNoWriMo-A-Decisions-A-Planning
Tricky Tuesday’s Treachery:
Dearest readers/visitors, as you are aware I have been (and still am) busy with spending time with my family who have flown over from Turkey to see me; this has limited my time and therefore I have been unable to do my regular writing sprints. This pattern is likely continue until next week. (Apologies from now). I will aim to do my best -though today I have noticed I am coming down with a cold/flu, have a sore throat (so annoying!) and my brain just wants to sleep (I’m doing my best to keep my eyes open whilst writing this). Anyhoo, the reason for this post is to a) let you know why there may be some silence at my end (as explained above), b) what to expect and c) ROW80 has started too…
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
ROW80:
ROW80 has started this week (Monday October 3rd 2011) and I have been sooo looking forward to it. Due to my unexpected busy past week I have been unable to finalise my goals; therefore, I want to loosely write it here and once I get back into my routine (and feel a whole lot better after this pesky cold/flu) I hope to make more sense of the goals in my head. In the meantime, if you want to take part in ROW80 but are still unsure what it is all about then head on over to the ROW80 webpage, follow the instructions (not that complicated) and sign up.
that complicated) and sign up.
My ROW80 Goals (for now):
- Write at least three blog posts a week.
- Write and edit at least one short story a week for the short stories book I’m planning to publish by the end of the year.
- Start studying Tiffany Lawson’ (The Triple Threat Behind Staging A Scene, Oct. 2 – 30) online course.
- Read at least 3 chapters per week of the book I’m doing for the beta-reading.
- Start working effectively with my critique group.
- Think about how feasible it will to take part in NaNoWriMo this year as I may have to go abroad in November to see my gran (unexpected plan).
- Visit at least 5 blogs per day and comment on at least 3 posts.
- Attend the ROW80 Twitter Party on October 5th 2011 (health permitting). Why don’t you join us -further details can be found on Jenny Hansen’ blog.
- Take two days off per week for family, friends and ME-time!
I will amend these goals in the next two weeks as I feel better and I fall back into my normal routine.
What to Expect…
I plan my next blog post to be on Friday (the final stage of the Fun Game: In Your Head), following that my 100th post should make an appearance on Sunday. I am hoping to focus more on writing my stories, and getting them published more than just writing blog posts as I have done in the last round. For this reason, I wanted to take part in NaNoWriMo this year but it seems the whole family will be coming together in Turkey to see my grandmother early November and I really want to go and see her. This will mean I will have to forfeit NaNo as I am unlikely to have a space to sit down and type away (family gatherings are always so hectic and demanding) therefore, I am totally undecided and torn, any insightful suggestions will be gladly considered. If I do take part in NaNoWriMo another thing I need to evaluate is my username, I signed up back on May 2011 with my alter-ego doodllz and now am wondering if I should use yikici instead. I held it to a vote and the final count came to doodllz 4.5 and yikici 7; I am thinking if I do take part I could always sign under doodllz as yikici’ doodllz -what are your thoughts?
I best end this post here, I need to take herbal remedies, get ready and be prepared to do some more sight-seeing: Natural History Museum & The Science Museum.
Have a fabulous day.

ROW80 Round 4? – Count Me In!
Savvy Sunday Salutations:
Dearest readers, I am currently in the process of changing the format of Savvy Sunday Salutations –where I’ll be sending out salutations to fab-tastic bloggers alike who will be joining us here on yikici with an article of their own and a selection of questions I hope they will answer. This does mean that (sadly) Patrick Tulley will not be featuring here on yikici; however, Patrick and I are currently discussing options of setting up another blog more geared to philosophy and psychology with some elements of creativity (I will keep you posted as this develops). If you have any suggestions we’d love to hear from you and/or if you would like to feature as a guest blogger on the new site, let us know and we will consider it.
Savvy Sunday Salutations (with guest bloggers) will now roll out on a fortnightly (two weekly) basis; where I get back into ROW80 there will be weekly updates every Wednesday’ and Sunday’.
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

I look forward to seeing you all taking part (if you choose to do so –I hope you do), in the meantime I am thinking up my new ROW80 goals and have also volunteered to be a sponsor (so shall see if I make it through the competition). There is also a party being planned to celebrate the close of ROW80 Round 3, check out Jenny Hansen’s blog —> A Party is Coming! A Party is Coming! So, there you have it. I hope to see you all at the starting line on 4th October and hopefully you can join us for the Twitter Party Jenny is coordinating.
This is me for now, I’ll be back on Tuesday with a new Triptych Tapestry Challenge –oh and before I forget this is post number 91; so it 9 posts time a milestone will be reached. *jumps in the air* ‘yippie’ –if you have ideas for celebrating this milestone please contact me either via the comment box below or through email (see below).

A Fun Game – In Your Head (Part Deux)
Frivolous Fun Friday:
Good morning *yawns* I’m sitting at my desk with a lovely cup of brewed English Tea and on top of that my laptop is cooperating
(The external hard drive arrived this morning, so after this post I will be doing some serious backing-up *cheers*). It’s a beautiful sunny day here the UK (I know you all probably do not want a weather report -and this is not one I promise) -so despite that earlier *yawn* I’m on a positive this morning and I hope you all are too -I’m sure my fabulous readers and visitors are doing super-duper.
Before we get onto the game I had to share a video -last night as I was trying to sleep I heard a cat meowing (or rather having an argument) and it reminded me of a video I had watched on YouTube a while back, (it had me in a fit of giggles back then) and so as an extra Frivolous Fun Friday treat I give you:
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
Let the Fun Game Begin…
Now back to today’s post. Today is part two of the game I devised two weeks ago; if you want to see what it’s all about head on over to this post <—well, if you don’t click you will not find out; what are you like!
Have you come back? Oh good; I have to say that I am delighted by the interest shown and also extremely happy that there’s a fab few (Billie Jo Woods, Jody Moller, CM Stewart and Cynthia) who wanted to take part. I too was considering to take part but what with my laptop causing me problems -I didn’t get far enough to think about it (I was too annoyed, hence it hindered my progress), therefore, I think it’s best I be the ‘games master(ess)’ -well, someone has to do it. In addition, Jody had to pull out due to personal reasons (Jody, I hope all goes smoothly); therefore our contestants are now three in total (three is a good number -all things comes in threes, so maybe this is a good sign).
Matching-up the Names: In order for it to be fair, I have put the three participants name into a hat and pulled them out. I matched them to the names I had previously written down in an alphabetical order; this is the final list:
Cynthia E. —> CM Stewart
CM Stewart —> Billie Jo Woods
Billie Jo Woods —> Cynthia E.
This next part will involve emailing across your character(s) profile to the person on the other side of the arrow e.g. Cynthia will email to CM Stewart; CM Stewart will send an email to Billie Jo Woods and Billie Jo will email Cynthia -ok so far? Good.
(I will be contacting you guys with the email addresses you need, therefore keep an eye out for that.) Once the emails are received and you have a read of the character(s) profile you have in front of you I want you to write another 200-300 words dialogue with the same setting in mind (see below) and also include the required prompts that are needed for the dialogue (also below).
Remember, no sharing your dialogues until I say so. Now get those dialogues a-ready; think, plot and come back in two weeks time; I will reveal the next stage of the game (the Grande Finale).
In Your Head…
Now comes to the part about my theory; I was in two minds if I should reveal it now or reveal it when we reach stage three (see I do not want to put pressure on my fab participants), but seeing that you have waited patiently I will let you in on my thoughts. It’s quite a simple theory if you really think about. I am inclined to think, -if and that’s a HUMANGOUS if; if our character(s) profiles are written with great care; if we build them like a real person, know their likes and dislikes etc and those random quirks they have, -then in ‘theory’ the voice of that character will not change much if another person’s writes from their POV (point of view). I mean, there might be the odd variation -and I don’t expect the dialogues to be identical, I just would like to believe that that voice would be easily identifiable as X character(s) voice than anyone’s else. Does that make sense? We will get a better idea when we reach the final stage when we can analyse and compare to see if my theory holds true or is just a random errand thought. (I will try and set up one of those linky lists so it’s easier to work with.)
If you have any questions or suggestions, please ask/let me below in the comment box or via the contact details below.
A Tiny Note: This game is currently being played in three stages; this is stage two. Stage three is in two weeks (07/10/2011). I am having a bit of a semi-brainwave for the final stage (to make it fun), come back in two weeks and see what I am cooking up.

Tagged from Me to You
Thursday’s Topical Tête-à-Tête:
I finally make my way to the laptop to write today’s post; not that I am not in the mood to write (just been busy -so I’m out of my normal routine). I have to say I am in better spirits than yesterday so that’s always a good start, therefore, let’s just enjoy this rather carefree topical tête-à-tête today (there’s a tag game to play as well as some exciting news about moi which I wanted share).
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
And now for some (me) news:
As you know -a while back I mentioned that one of my articles (My Encounter with Fate!) will be featured in a newsletter (so excited), -whilst the newsletter is not currently in circulation, I have been asked to take an active role in compiling the said newsletter -as well as editing. This is fab-tastic news, as it will give me some experience with publishing a newsletter. *dances a jig* I am really excited about this -my training for it starts next week, let me know if you would be interested in learning as I go along -I may put together a regular feature on how to publish a newsletter etc (just a random thought).
I’ve been tagged!
Early this week one of my lovely blogger/writer friends, Allie Wilde (she is cool and has a great blog, why don’t you pop over and have a look-see), tagged me to share 10 random facts about myself. *scratches head* -now where and how am I going to compile such a list came to my mind (as well as ‘thank you for taking an interest and wanting to know a bit more about me’). *grins* -then a light shone bright in my cloudy-mind *rubs hands craftily* -a while back I was given two great awards (The Versatile Blogger‘ award by Sonia G Medeiros and The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award by Walking The Pattern). As part of the ‘acceptance speech’ -as I’d like to call it; I had to share seven facts about me -you guys are so quick to catch on!
So, yeah, I thought I’d copy those facts below and just add three new facts at the end to make it up to ten -ingenious (I know). So here it is (if you want to read the post about the awards click here):
10 Random Facts (about moi):
- Asides from writing; I love to paint (as in Art & Paintings) -oils in particular; I consider myself more of an artist than a writer -I guess that’s mainly for the fact that I studied Fine Art with Related Arts more than anything else; still Artist has a lovely ring to it -so an Artist I am!
- I am very particular in how my tea is brewed -especially when making English Tea; (it needs to be the right colour consistency and needs adequate milk for taste) therefore in most instances I volunteer to make my own tea -it would be a shame if I have to tip the tea away if not brewed properly!
- When writing I subconsciously miss out small (sometimes big) words -I do not notice the missed words if I read it back in my head -therefore, I have to read what I have written out loud when editing in order to spot these missed words; they can be terrors to find! I am certain you will spy these ‘omissions’ at times -when you do (notice how I am certain of this); do let me know so I can make the required corrections. -I also have a tendency to switch letters or digits around such as: hello = helol or 1976 = 1967 I eventually work out the misspelt word however; the digits prove a challenge -especially if it is a telephone number -can you see the wrong dialled numbers in your mind?!!
- I have been known to slip in Turkish words in sentences when speaking to someone in English and vice versa! Sometimes I get the sense that that word is ‘English’ or ‘Turkish’ -it’s only when the recipient is baffled by my talk do I realise something is at foot -you have been warned! Examples of such occasions can be found in this post.
- I’m a people’s person; I love chatting and engaging with most people -though public speaking is something I favour less; it brings out a nervous side that I cannot control. I think this may have been heightened more when I was part of a presentation group at University and had to dress up in a jesters outfit as I was the only person who could fit into it (being 5 foot has its advantages and disadvantages!). To top it all; I had the longest speech and the squeakiest voice (that’s how it sounded to me) -pair that with my fear -I read it in super-speed; needless to say I try my best to avoid such scenarios.
- I used to work in Social Care (Support Worker for the elderly and vulnerable adults); a job that is varied and kept me on my toes with the colourful customers I engaged with. It was a job I loved and cherished dearly however, the last 2-3 years caused me undue stress and had caused negative impacts and implications on my health; therefore, I had to consider an alternative career path for myself. Sometimes what you love is not always good for you. I am hoping writing will not become like that, as it has literally become my saviour these past few months! Another reason why I am loving the award Sonia and Walking The Pattern has given me -Thank you!
- On a positive note, my claim to fame (if you want to call it that) is: During my retail years (I am lucky to have worked with some of the best: TopShop/TopMan, Daisy & Tom, Selfridges & Harrods). I have served several stars -including A-listers -here’s a few names: Isla Fisher (seen at Top Shop), Patsy Palmer (served at Daisy & Tom), Cat Deeley (served at Selfridges), Martin Kemp (served at Selfridges), Angelina Jolie (served at Selfridges) and Pierce Brosnan (served at Harrods) amongst others. (I may write a post solely on this in the near distant future; I need to ponder a bit more and see if I want to share my experiences.)
- I am not a natural pet lover (I evolved to liking them after a good few years). My first and only pet was a cat named Tombis (adventures with her pertaining to transporting her in my jacket can be read here) and most recently (well, nearly three years now) I am an aunty to a mongrel-cross collie named Megan (my sister & brother-in-laws dog) and she is the cutest -as long as she does not slobber over me!
- Of all the mobile phones I have owned (there has been many) the Xperia10 has experienced the most (more than 10 times) battering due to it slipping out of my hands (due to its cumbersomeness).
- I was in Turkey when the biggest earthquake shook it in 1999, my Art degree show was based on this experience, to see an example of one of the exhibited pieces please click here.
Now you are it!
Just like the game ‘tag’ played in schools; once tagged another person(s) need to be tagged so you can be set free… Therefore, I tag you, you and you (it’s great to know you -just want to get to know y’all better
): Pamela V Mason, Cari and Rance Denton <— Check out their blogs too; they are cool fab writer-type people.
Upcoming Plans & Schedule: Well, that’s all for today, I shall be back on Saturday with ‘Saturday’s Showcase Sketches’ until then stay safe, happy and try to do a good deed each day (It’ll make you feel that much better -that warm glow in your heart will just shine
).

Whimsical Wednesday Writings:
Heya, today’s post is going to be very short (by my standards); I have no ROW80 updates to give you other than blog post word counts, chapters read for beta-reading and number of blogs I have visited; therefore, I will give you my update this Sunday coming (apologies if you were looking forward to it). It’s not been a bad few days since Sunday -it’s just not been just as good and because of this I just don’t feel too inspired today. -I know I am being tough on myself.
So, this is me for today, I will be back tomorrow with an award (well a tag-thingy that’s been passed on to me) and news on that newsletter publication I had mentioned a while back; in the meantime please feel free to read the last few days post.
Sunday’ ROW80 Update: A Glitch in the System
For Flash Fiction-lovers, the challenge this month: Challenge Issued: Turner’s Tapestries (A Reminder)
For game-lovers: If you want to test yourself and the voices of the characters you come up with why don’t you take a gander at this game I have devised: A Fun Game – In Your Head.

A Glitch in the System
Savvy Sunday Salutations:
Dearest readers, I am late in posting this article today (I decided to have a few days off and now here I am Sunday morning trying to put together a post worth reading -hmmm; maybe I’m just pushing my luck a wee bit). I have some (very little) news from Patrick Tulley; we have not discussed full reasons of his absence, but it seems he has a little too much going on at his end, I will keep you updated as and when I know more, until then you have to put up with me.
Last week I talked about JMW Turner; this week (due to the time-constraint I have restricted on myself) I will continue with Turner -well I just want to concentrate on that anecdote I had left you with; that story has stayed with me since A-Level Art & Design, I feel it’s only fair I give it some deserved dues.
My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to
).
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
LESSONS FROM TURNER -PART DUEX:
There has been many things said about Turner -and no doubt, many more will be said. -I know I said that last week, thought a bit of déjà vu was in order -you know the saying:
“A déjà vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix…”
-Trinity, The Matrix (1999)
-well that’s me all over; a permanent glitch hanging over my head this Sunday; this translates into two things:
1) I just have to put up with it; and most importantly,
2) You just have to deal with it.
For those who are asking, yes I loved The Matrix; very clever -it paved the way for the preceding films we’ve seen since -another forerunner in its’ industry; but today we are not talking about The Matrix. Today we go back to Turner; remember that little story I shared with you last week, here it is again for those who missed it:
“It has been said that, Turner would have himself tied to the mast of a sailing ship whilst at sea to experience the storms so he could relay it into his paintings.”
From this anecdote, it is easy to visualise Turner conjuring up these masterpieces:
Both very different -yet very similar; the dynamics vary ever so slightly; yet that change makes a remarked difference. In the first painting, there’s movement with an uncanny stillness in the darkness of the night sky -you can feel the waves tossing, the ship battling against the torrents yet there is an odd calmness which I cannot place; almost as if despite the conditions the crew and passengers are safe. Then the second painting, with its vague-blurred lines gives that sense of gusto, panic and drowning under the most beautiful of skies -an impression of a moment -possibly captured as the anecdote portrays, a man tied to a mast taking in the moment; being whole with its subject -whatever the conditions may be, ironic or otherwise… When we feed this idea into writing, we can see a similarity, -our characters. To get to know them, to really get into their skins we become them -in parts or as wholes (some through experience some through research); we feel their pain, their love, their angst’s, their drive. -When we are so close to our characters as Turner was to his subject; does that not make you feel that you have something solid, believable and writeable? To create a masterpiece one needs to be fully immersed into their work -they must believe what they create or else it will fall away like dust…
Finally, as I leave Turner here, I want to share with you the painting that made me fall in love with Turner and on the next ‘Lessons from Turner’ (this will not always be on a Sunday, so keep an extra eye out on Monday’s, Thursday’s and possibly Friday’s too), I will do my best to interpret the painting and add some insight on how a picture can tell a thousand words. Until then why don’t you analyse the painting and come up with your own thoughts.
ROW80 UPDATE:
If you want to see my progress-at-a-glance (from the first week through to now with all my goals -amendments included) please head on over to my ROW80-Round 3 page.
Overview since Wednesday: This week has been a bit bleh with regards to word counts for Becoming- Mystical Realisations, but it has been productive nonetheless as I have been thinking and plotting about how to devise the next chapter(s). I have to do some outlining as parts of the story had to change; so no words but some development on the story -albeit brewing in my head; this is a good thing.
In brief, here’s what I have achieved since Wednesday:
WIP word count: 0 /1,000
DiRosaYikici word count: 0/1,000
Blog post word count: 2514 /1,000
Combined effort word count: 2514 /1,000
Progress up until 11th September 2011:
WIP word count: 7,268 /40,000
Blog post word count: 29,618 /40,000
DiRosaYikici word count: 597 /40,000
Combined effort word count: 37,483 /40,000 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)
Blogs visited (ROW80′ers & Writecampaign’ers): 37 in total
Beta-reader project: On Chapter Six (that’s page 26 of 204)
I guess it has not been a bad week per se; though I always hope my WIP would speed up more than my blog posts -I know I should not grumble. What with a slow start to today’s post, we find ourselves at the end of it, which means this is ta-raaa from me, I’ll be back on Tuesday with a Flash Fiction Challenge
I hope to see you then.
In the meantime, if you want to test yourself and the voices of the characters you come up with why don’t you take a gander at this game I have devised: A Fun Game – In Your Head. Have a fab Sunday and a great week following; till Tuesday adios amigos.

A Mixed Bag of News, Updates & the First Campaign Challenge
Whimsical Wednesday Writings:
Oh, a golly gosh and a helloooo there!
(Now, I bet you were thinking that’s a blast from the past.) Anyhoo, I have some exciting news to share with you today, a ROW80 update and stories, stories galore -you are in for a treat! So, without any further ado, sit comfortably and take in the delights whilst I grab myself a cuppa.
Please feel free to scroll down to the sections that are of interest to you -that is if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to
).
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
ROW80 Update
Firstly, let us start with a ROW80 update… It has been a positive week (for some reason radiance is sprouting all around me); I’ve been writing away, sticking to goals -and doing my best to visit fab blogs (it’s been hectic but fun) and keeping up with Twitter. Here’s a glimpse of what I have achieved and decided to take on:
Blogs I have visited and commented on since Sunday:
- ROW80′ers: 5 blogs
- Writers’ Platform-Building Campaigners: 23 blogs
Apologies; I will be rectifying this from today onwards (I was blogged out Friday and Saturday then had a busy few days at home) *hopes I can be forgiven*
Added goals with some musings:
- I don’t know why but I should really add the word counts for the stories I write over at DiRosaYikici (it’s raw, quite rough and needs some editing -but Di Rosa and I are just having fun with the continuation of the contemporary tales -as, are our readers; so we just keep on going. (It was my turn to update Where There’s a Will There’s a Way this week, so check it out in the stories section below).
- Volunteered to be a beta reader (my first beta reading experience); I hope I do a good job of it; it requires feedback by next week so guess what I’ll be doing after writing this? Yep, that’s correct.
- Being proactive with our newly formed critique group; a group of four writers and bloggers alike have formed a nifty critique group and we are finalising how we will work together, so I aim to be quite proactive with that too.
Progress Since Sunday 4th September 2011:
WIP word count: 350 words written.
Blog post word count: 733 + 1521 words written.
DiRosaYikici word count: 597 words written.
Combined effort word count: 3201 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)
That’s like 1000 words per day –not bad; dare I say on target? *cheers*

Exciting News
A little while ago, I read a very insightful post on Haley Whitehall’s blog it was about reviewing your work with a critical eye and looking at the shift of power within a scene or two. This post was written by the talented Tiffany Lawson Inman (AKA the @NakedEditor over on Twitter -go on follow her for editing tips etc -you know you want to). Tiffany set a competition for us to take part in -I took a gamble and entered the competition, which Tiffany was hosting on her blog. (Sadly the competition is closed, but Tiffany has told me that she will be hosting a few more competitions leading up to Camp NaNoWriMo, so why don’t you pop over to her blog and check out what she’s up to -I truly recommend it), and I won! *dances a jig, stops, looks up* ‘Aren’t you joining me?‘
So, come October I’ll be busy studying *wonders if I’ve drawn the short straw* -oh man that’s like extra work Tiffany! (I’m only kidding; I’m looking forward to it.)
Stories, stories, stories…
Now comes the fun part! Today, I have three stories (and a surprise) to share with you, the first two, as you know, are updates on the storyline to the ongoing saga over at DiRosaYikici, please head on over to the blog and read what Gina and Tracy are up to in:
Where there’s a Will there’s a Way (read entry number 17 -bottom of the page) – Battered and bruised, will Tracy find a way to reach out to Katie?
Our Story Begins (updated by Di Rosa) – I will update this next week, for those who want to find out what happened to Gina after a night out with Nathanial James, please head on over for a catch-up.
The third story I want to share is a flash fiction piece inspired by Rachael Harrie’ challenge for the Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign. You all know I love challenges -the tougher the better, so I had to take part.
Rachael Harrie’ first campaigner challenge is as thus:
“Write a short story/flash fiction story in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, including a poem. Begin the story with the words, “The door swung open” These four words will be included in the word count.
If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional), use the same beginning words and end with the words: “the door swung shut.” (also included in the word count)”
For those who want an even greater challenge, make your story 200 words EXACTLY!
A challenge must always be challenging, guess what I chose to do? Yep, I took the extreme option. I hope it works; I ended up writing two flash fictions, I couldn’t submit both so I picked the following, I hope it was the right choice… What do you think?* I give you…
The Patient Mind
The door swung open; I waited patiently as always; I waited, I waited… it just swung back and forth in the wind; Sally smiled down on me “It’s time you stopped this you know.”
I shook my head “’tis not time, I must now count to a hundred.”
“It won’t change” she pressed my shoulders gently as she left.
I waited, watching the breeze filter the leaves in and out, I counted.
Sally came again, I counted two hundred, then three, then four; “it won’t change,” she said again. I knew, in my heart I knew, it would, but I couldn’t tell Sally, she didn’t know; she didn’t know the nights, the nights it changed; it promised it’ll change today; it promised yesterday and the day before; it promised, so it must, I knew, in my heart I knew. Sally walked past, she walked past every day, said the same things, she never went away. “It won’t change,” she taunted; she screamed in my head; that Sally needs to see how it will change, it promised it would.
Today Sally stopped by the door; it came; a grin spread across my face as she stepped outside; the door swung shut.
(For the ever inquisitive the word count excluding the title is 200 words –with it its 203.)
*If you like ‘The Patient Mind’ and want to cast your vote I’m number 198 on the Linksy List <— click here to read all the fantastic entries.
Surprise: If you was wondering what didn’t make the cut I’ve added it (The Calling…) below just for fun (Please Note: this piece is not being submitted to the challenge). Before we read ‘The Calling’, I wanted to say this story is actually inspired by two challengers: Billie Jo Woods over at Out of the Woods and Rachael Harrie’ challenge for the Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign (as above). You all know I love combining challenges so this was no exception.
Billie Jo Woods set the September challenge to go back to school, her rules are:
- Make sure your story takes place in a school.
- Keep it to roughly 500 words (although if you need more that is okay too).
It’s odd as the moment I saw the opening line for Rachael Harrie’ challenge this story wove itself with Billie Jo’ challenge -its’ as if it were meant to be… (That’s why it was difficult to choose one story for the Campaign Challenge, nevertheless, I guess now that means one submission to the Campaign (The Patient Mind) and one submission to Billie Jo’ September Challenge (The Calling…) What are your thoughts? I present…
The Calling…
The door swung open. We gasped as they shrugged off their skins whilst gliding into the classroom.
“It’s as simple as that.” It said towering over us –with its extended limbs hovering hypnotically.
It was a routine drill, they were recruiting –so they say; it had become the norm ever since he –Mr Carmichael chose…
There’s been rumours since his disappearance that he and it are one of the same, but I couldn’t be certain –not Mr Carmichael, he wouldn’t –it was in my face; my vision blurred instantly as I gulped, sweat droplets seemed to sprout in quick succession as they sang with alarm, please don’t take me, please don’t take me.
“Maybe you should volunteer this time, it’s only fair –saves the pain for the rest of them; it’d be a pity if we had to kill them all -when it’s you we need.” Its words slithered and tightened round my throat as huge dumbbells came crashing down on me, realisation sinking in as I gasped for air.
“Your calling is coming my dear boy,” he had said last semester, “when the time comes, you must choose.” My insides knotted as Mr Carmichael entered, the door swung shut.
(The word count excluding the title is 200 words –with it its 202.)
So, that’s all for today, I will be back on Friday with a Frivolous Fun post, I hope you pop back then.

Recycling -but not as you know it…
Monday’s Meandering Muse:
A fabulous hello to you all -my lovely readers. I am sat in front of my laptop, typing away whilst sipping a hot mug of Chinese tea (jasmine tea to some of you); you can say I’m multi-tasking if you like. I call it just being comfortable with the addition of being in a great mood to write (therefore, I cannot guarantee what length this post will be, so let’s see together).
(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)
Out with the Old and in with the New(ish)
I have been in talks with a few writers and bloggers and it seems, at times, there’s moments of ‘blankness’ -nope I am not calling it writers’ block. We, writers fall under the assumption that we suffer from that curse , but I assure you, there’s no such thing -it’s all in the mind -really and truly; we just hide behind it when we are not 100% and can’t get into writing. Let me give you an example, since blogging, I have had to think of different topics to discuss and share with you; there have been times when I have sat in front of my laptop and thought ‘I cannot think of what to write,‘ 9 out of 10 times that was caused because of my low moods -not my inability to find a topic to discuss. Therefore, I am certain that all writers’ suffer from a similar bout of ‘blankness’.
Enough said now where was I? Oh yes, so I was pondering, as I always do; thinking what suggestions I could come up with then it hit me in the face (no not literally silly!); when I was clearing out that box (you know the box where I found my old dissertation; see yesterdays post), I stumbled across all my assignments and course notes. You thinking what I am thinking? Yep, exactly, it’s a perfect place to start from; I agree, it’s old and maybe it needs redrafting -you probably write better now too, but essentially it will give you ideas which you can work on, develop further and, the most important aspect of it is, you can share it with us; make it into something new(ish).
From Turner’s dissertation alone I came up with an idea of ‘Lessons from Turner’ and I am thinking of developing that into a short series, as there are many more insights from him that I would like to share with you. I can even see ways of adapting his methods in to the writing world; so keep your eyes out for that. For those who have not been to University, don’t fret, look through your school/college/short course notes -or even things you have researched for work, etc -you get the idea, recycle what you have learnt; think of it as the three R’s: Re-learn, re-write, recycle -oh, don’t forget to share your newfound inspiration with us
My Questions to You
Where do you get your inspirations? How would you revive old news? Any tips you would like to share with us?
This post has been short, sweet and to the point
My next post will be on Wednesday (a ROW80 update –hopefully I will have WIP word counts to share *excited*), I will also post you details of the stories I’m working on over at DiRosaYikici; until then have fun, stay safe and smile always. The world is as good as you make it, so live life to its potential and cherish every moment.

Lessons from Turner & ROW80
Savvy Sunday Salutations:
Dearest readers, I know some of you are looking forward to reading more insights from Patrick Tulley, unfortunately I have been unable to get in contact with him (he may have taken a holiday and failed to let me know *tut tut*), I’ll keep you updated when I know more. In the meantime, I will open this Sunday slot to a few of my favourite bloggers and every now and again I will send some salutation love to people I admire in this lovely world we live in. Last week my grandmother took centre stage and today, as promised, I will introduce you a pioneer in the Art world, my first choice Artist of all time is JMW Turner. Those who know me will not be surprised with this decision of mine and for those who don’t, you shall soon learn muhaawaawaaaaah -or something to that effect.
My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to ).

LESSONS FROM TURNER:
Discussions from the past…
“Why Turner? Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was and is still one of the most important British Landscape painters. My interest in his work began when I was doing my ‘A-levels’ at college. Although I had looked at many other artists in the preceding years, I have always come back to Turner, each time examining a different aspect of his work. Again, I am drawn back; this time taking Turner as a colourist, investigating how he used his colour and how Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) influenced him. Turner was a master of innovations, especially in terms of colour. I consider Turner to be the grandfather of the Impressionists. I believe he was a colourist ahead of his time and this is the theme I based my study on. I have investigated how Turner’s work progressed in relationship to colour and light. I believe I have achieved this by comparing Turner to other artists who have influenced him such as Richard Wilson (1714-1782) and Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). These comparisons have enabled me to show how Turner’s use of colour changed gradually from his early work to his later work. I believe I have successfully achieved this in my study by arranging Turner’s artistic career -of about sixty years, into three periods: Firstly, his ‘early-years’ as a topographical student (1788-1812). Secondly, his ‘mid-years’ when he developed mastery skills in landscape compositions as well as developing his individual artistic style (1812-1835), and finally his ‘late-period’ consists of working with the ‘sublime’ in an abstract way, using colour as the focal point (1835-1851).
In my study, I have investigated how Turner managed to create atmosphere using only colour and paint. I have discussed how Turner used mystical landscapes and why they were so full of light. I also aimed to find out how important Turner’s subject matter was to him, and if this changed as he matured. In conjunction to this, I have also attempted to answer the following questions: ‘was colour and light the only thing that mattered to him in his later years? If so, ‘did it take over the subject-matter of his paintings?’ “
…so was my opening chapter of my dissertation (thesis)… I know, I cheated *blushes* -I was going to write something new but as I was clearing through my boxed stuff, I came across my dissertation and thought it was rather ironic and apt that I stumbled across this whilst I was in preparations to write a piece on Turner. I re-read it (as you do) and thought the introduction chapter would best explain why Turner is my favourite artist and also it gives you a taster of what he is about… Don’t worry I will not be writing the remaining chapters of my thesis here -that would be taking liberties.
Today, I want to discuss another aspect of Turner that I find admirable -his work ethics. Turner started off as an eager topographical student, he studied hard and this, with his status allowed him a place within the ranks of the Royal Academy elitists. It is interesting to note that Turner did not care for this ‘pretentious’ gathering but he was shrewd and knew he needed to be part of them in order to excel and make a living out of his art. Turner kept in with the ‘in-crowd’, produced the works that would ‘sell’ -he was one of the few lucky (or shall we say clever) artists’ who actually reaped the benefits of his talents whilst he was alive. Turner was smart; he understood that in the society he lived in, his vision of light would be frowned upon, so he deliberately kept these out from the critics eyes (though some lesser shocking ones he did exhibit and in turn was criticized severely).
Turner had travelled a long distance where his career was concerned. He was undoubtedly, a genius in the making; he always seemed to be one-step ahead. He knew how to get the recognition he wanted and played along with the rest of the Art World to get where he wanted. He studied and persevered when all the critics were against him. His vision of light had opened up new possibilities of abstraction, which was evident in Crossing the Brook (one of this months flash fiction prompts) and Dido Carthage. With these and the vast amount of paintings/studies he Bequest in his will to the nation, Turner paved the way for Modern Art and its artists -especially the Impressionists.
There’s much said about Turner and possibly more to discuss; amongst which are lessons to be learnt. To get to where we want to be we must study; stretch our minds and abilities. We must not allow the critics to break us; if we need to improve, that’s what we must do; if we fall down we must learn to pick ourselves up as they say ‘sticks and stones…’ If we are ahead of our time (wouldn’t that be nice) -let’s take a leaf out from Turner’s book, let us embody our work, develop it but at the same time, work within the constraints’ of the industry; when there’s an opening in the market and our style is applauded then let all hell break-loose.
Before I move on, I want to leave you with one thought about Turner… It has been said that, Turner would have himself tied to the mast of a sailing ship whilst at sea to experience the storms so he could relay it into his paintings. Are you that committed? How far would you go for your artistic drive?
ROW80 UPDATE:
I have some update on Becoming, I am getting some more feedback from my beta reader, which is constructive, this has put me in a better mood. The additions I made to the story plot (I had to introduce some characters earlier than I initially planned to), seems to work better so that is good news. I was also worrying I was telling more than showing, but it seems I am more of a harsh critic of my work; I’ve been told the balance is right -yay; note to myself *must not be so hard on myself*. With this positivity and the reminder of Turner’s remarkable work ethics, I believe more work on Becoming will be in the pipeline. I hope that on Wednesday my WIP word count will rise *prays*.
If you want to see my progress-at-a-glance please head on over to my ROW80-Round 3 page.
New Goals (Tweaked & Lessons Learnt):
In line with my positivity, I am moving the goal posts (as the current combined blog/WIP word count is shattered -see below). My previous ROW80 goals will remain the same as they are working for me; I just want to add:
- Aimed combined word count for the last two weeks will be 40,000 (I’m sure I can manage another 10,000 within the remaining timeframe -what do you think?).
- Visiting and commenting on at least 5 ROW80′ers blogs per check-in -for huge cheers; lets cheer all together!
- Visiting and commenting on at least 5 Campaigners blogs too (daily -may need a rethink for this, watch this space) -let me hear you say ‘yeah’ *grins*
It seems I have been concentrating too much on my blog posts and not on my novel -and my ROW80-Round 3 page has highlighted this clearly in black and white so I took heed and amended my blog schedule so I can work in some time for my novel. Yippieeeeeeeee!
Progress up until 4th September 2011:
WIP word count: 6,918 /28,000
Blog post word count: 24,850 /28,000
Combined effort word count: 31,768 /28,000 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)
Well, that’s me done for today, I’ll be back on Monday with a muse or two
I’ll see you then, stay inspired and if your down in the dumps, remember Turner’s fighting spirit and do not be afraid to explore your skills, you may be a pioneer like Turner one day. *Wishful thinking*

Bittersweet ROW80 Goals Cherished with Love
Savvy Sunday Salutations:
It seems I have misplaced Patrick Tulley -or he may have gone AWOL; it won’t be long before I send out a search warrant
in the meantime, I’d like to to take this opportunity to pay homage to someone who as had a great influence in my life -some of you may think that person is JMW Turner -but no (keep an eye out for him this Tuesday and possibly next Sunday). The person I have on the tip of my tongue is someone I cherish dearly and love to bits; today I want to talk about my grandma…
My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to

CHERISHED WITH LOVE:
We all have someone we look up to, love and respect -and many of us have more than just that one person. One of my special people is my grandmother, there has been moments where I have argued with her (when I did not get my way as a child) but many of my memories of my grandma is fond and full of warmth. She is a strong woman who has brought up four children as a widower, maintained her farm in her village (Artvin Yusufeli Kιlιçkaya), became a midwife to many children, earned the respect of her peers (family & community), moved around to different parts of Turkey (even came to the UK) -my first memories are from when she was living in Istanbul. A well travelled, well loved and above all a well respected individual who instilled good values into people’s hearts with her love of faith. Whenever I go to Turkey, whomever I meet; always asks of my grandmother and whenever she goes to Istanbul to stay with my aunt -most days/nights there are visitor popping by to show her their respects. I rarely see this kind of homage here in the UK (although I know of a few individuals who have a similar closeness with their family and community). My gran is now too old to travel (no one knows exactly her right age but last I asked I was told she was at least 98 years of age -that was a year ago); in the last few years she has began to show signs of dementia, though this does not hinder her inner beauty or her-now-childlike banter. There’s something about my gran that warms my heart and brings a tear to my eye…
My gran is also a feisty character (in a mellow-type-way -don’t ask, she just manages to be feisty but not, if that makes sense
). I remember last year when I was over in Turkey and it was the month of Ramadan (just like this month) -despite her old age and ailments, she insisted on fasting and at times refused to eat when dinner was ready.
I guess now that the month of Ramadan is coming to an end and the feast festival of Eid-al-Fitr is upon us, my thoughts have gone back to my gran. This has brought out the love I cherish for her and also some bittersweet memories and because of this I have shared my thoughts and love for this uniquely special woman. You must have someone as special in your life; I’d love to hear your thoughts and anecdotes…
BITTERSWEET ROW80 UPDATE:
Since my last update I have not written anything towards Becoming (I share your sentiments exactly *tuts*) however, my blog word counts have amounted to 3071 + 878 (the ROW80 page -see below) + 903 (today’s post) -so that already over the 0-500 daily word count so I’m happy *cheers*. Although, there has been no movement on Becoming, I have created a page for ROW80 as I promised to do so; please hover over the Social Interactions tab (menu header above) -you will see the ROW80 section there. Despite the lack of word counts towards my Novel, there has been development on the written word at least -and taking heed and strength from my beloved grandma, I am humbled to say I have achieved a bittersweet goal today. How has your week held up? I know some fellow ROW80′ers have had tough weeks, but I am certain its being washed away as we speak and a new day-is-a-dawning for all, stay positive and keep on writing -I salute you all. ![]()

A Fun Game – In Your Head
Frivolous Fun Friday:
Oh my! *looks around in excitement* ‘you really and truly think so? Oooo now I must get some sort of acceptance speech together -hey! No need to be such a meanie!’ *pouts* ‘I was dreaming of the possibilities, I am soooo touched by the lovely suggestion.‘ *dabs tears with handkerchief* -are you feeling the love also? I surely am; spammers or not -who cares, it certainly put a smile on my face and a spring in my steps.
I may not be of Pulitzer Prize material (a girl can dream), but it’s good to know somewhere out there a-Marty Feldman-deceased *ahem* thinks I am worthy of such a honour. *beams a gracious smile then winks* what are your spammers like? Any quirky, fun, polite, wacky, courteous, advice seeking, advice giver, constant sales reps’ -or like mine; totally complimentary?
I’d love to hear any fun/bizarre anecdotes.

Let the Fun Game Begin…
How’s it going so far? Need to digest it? Sure, in the meantime let me delve into the whys and hows… I actually got inspired to create this game after three random occurrences fell my way.
In Your Head
Now let’s think back to the setting and the character(s) that will take part in that setting (go on have another read if you must -then come back here); back and ready? Good, now I want you to devise a short dialogue of about 200-300 words -this can be in any genre you feel comfortable with. Ok so far? Excellent, now listen carefully, do not post this little exercise until I say so -or else the fun will be lost. The key point of this game is your character(s), I want you to build them as you would any other character, get to know them inside and out, their likes, their hates etc -jot it all down and keep this for the second round of this game (that’ll be in two weeks time). Great, now that you know your character(s); write them in into that 200-300 piece of writing, make sure the following points are included and acted out within the dialogue (this is still in line with my theory):
Ok, with these guidelines in mind build your character(s). Note: Try to keep away from stereotypes -if you cannot then add a quirky character trait; this will help the game be more fun and hopefully challenge you all. Remember, no sharing your dialogues or character(s) until I say so. Now get those character(s) and dialogue a-ready; think, plot and come back in two weeks time; I will reveal the next stage of the game. Before you disappear, please let us know if you would be joining in with the game by adding a comment below -just so we know. The more the merrier!
If you have any questions, please ask me below in the comment box or via the contact details below.
A Tiny Note: This game will be played in three stages; this is stage one. Stage two is in a fortnight (23/09/2011) and stage three is two weeks after that (07/10/2011). I will let you in on my theory in two weeks time.
