My Weekend X Factor Muse

Monday’s Meandering Musical Muse:

I’m going to have a Monday moan today (well in this section at least), my laptop is playing up (keeps switching itself off at the slightest move), the power connectors seems not to be connecting effectively so I have not been able to get online for a little while (yes Saturdays and Sundays posts have suffered because of this).  I am unsure how many attempts I’ll get to complete this post (fingers-crossed not many).  I have invested in an external hard drive (just in case) and as soon as it arrives I will be backing-up all my documents for safe-keeping (I really do not want to lose all the work I have done up until now).  This has made me realise that the things we have on our ‘to do list’ (like backing up valuable work) always on the backburner -a case of I’ll do that soon -and here I am hoping I’m not too late…

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

My Weekend X Factor Muse:

Image sourced from: http://x-factor-2009.blogspot.com/

Since my laptop has been sidelined, I have taken to catching up on what’s on ‘the box’ (AKA the TV); it’s that season where Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor hits our screens.  Of the two programs, I am more of a Strictly Come Dancing fan than The X Factor.  However, this weekend I really got into the auditions of The X Factor (the new judges also brings a breath of fresh air); then when my laptop played ball, I YouTube’d the rest of the auditions and a few good candidates caught my eye.  The 2011 contenders (in my eyes) to keep a watchful eye out for are (I have linked all the names to their X Factor auditions via YouTube -click to view): Derry Mensah (funny interactions with Kelly Rowland), Luigian Paala, Craig Colton, The Keys, Frankie Cocozza, Michelle Barrett, Johnny Robinson, 2 Shoes.  My personal favourites (there’s a few) are: Lascel Woods, Amelia Lily, Sami Brookes, Misha Bryan (OMG), Luke Lucas, John Wilding (OMG); (my top three so far) Bradley Johnson, Jade Richards (OMG and then some) and Janet Delvin (OMG and then some and some more -I absolutely adore Elton John’ Your Song and Janet’s version of this fab song is totally spine-tingling).  If you have the time, please take a moment or two to click on the links above and watch some amazingly talented people (both young and old); their personal stories are extremely  inspiring as well as emotional.  For those of you who have less time here’s my two favourites (both very different yet very endearing in their own ways), I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

This year’s X Factor looks to be tough and entertaining -whilst pondering what is to come, I began to think of the past finalists; there has been some successful stars like, Will Young, Alexandra Burke, most recently Matt Cardle and who can forget Leona Lewis?  Then I remembered a past favourite of mine, Olly Murs -turns out Olly has had a successful first album (not been following the music industry as much as I used to -ooops).  His next single out from his second albums sounds like a chart-topper; with its upbeat reggae and ’90s influence, it is something special –I have been listening to it over and over and over again, -therefore, I had to share it with you too.  Get ready to tap your feet to the beat -and for those who prefers the acoustic version (equally as good), I’ve added it below.

My Questions to You

Have you had a difficult week?  Feel a little bit uninspired or just under the weather?  Has technology hindered your progress or are you just ploughing through regardless of the difficulties?  Whatever your week has been like I hope to at least put a smile on your faces with a few good tunes (break time listening) and some giggles and tears (it’s good to let it all out once in a while) with The X Factor contestants stories.

Enjoy this Musical Monday Muse session of mine, I’ll (hope) be back on Wednesday with an interesting Flash Fiction piece I have been working on as well as a new storyline over at DiRosaYikici.  Plus I hope to provide you with a ROW80 update (sorry I did not show on Sunday).  My mood has been low due to this problem with the laptop -fortunately, The X Factor and Olly Murs have put a smile on my face and a spring in my step so until Wednesday have fun, stay safe and smile always.  The world is as good as you make it, so live life to its potential and cherish every moment.

Tagged from Me to You

Thursday’s Topical Tête-à-Tête:

I finally make my way to the laptop to write today’s post; not that I am not in the mood to write (just been busy -so I’m out of my normal routine).  I have to say I am in better spirits than yesterday so that’s always a good start, therefore, let’s just enjoy this rather carefree topical tête-à-tête today (there’s a tag game to play as well as some exciting news about moi which I wanted share).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

And now for some (me) news:

As you know -a while back I mentioned that one of my articles (My Encounter with Fate!) will be featured in a newsletter (so excited), -whilst the newsletter is not currently in circulation, I have been asked to take an active role in compiling the said newsletter -as well as editing.  This is fab-tastic news, as it will give me some experience with publishing a newsletter.  *dances a jig*  I am really excited about this -my training for it starts next week, let me know if you would be interested in learning as I go along -I may put together a regular feature on how to publish a newsletter etc (just a random thought).

I’ve been tagged!

Image sourced from: http://2.bp.blogspot.com

Early this week one of my lovely blogger/writer friends, Allie Wilde (she is cool and has a great blog, why don’t you pop over and have a look-see), tagged me to share 10 random facts about myself.  *scratches head* -now where and how am I going to compile such a list came to my mind (as well as ‘thank you for taking an interest and wanting to know a bit more about me’).  *grins*  -then a light shone bright in my cloudy-mind *rubs hands craftily* -a while back I was given two great awards (The Versatile Blogger‘ award by Sonia G Medeiros and The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award by Walking The Pattern).  As part of the ‘acceptance speech’ -as I’d like to call it; I had to share seven facts about me -you guys are so quick to catch on!  :D   So, yeah, I thought I’d copy those facts below and just add three new facts at the end to make it up to ten -ingenious (I know).  So here it is (if you want to read the post about the awards click here):

10 Random Facts (about moi):

  1. Asides from writing; I love to paint (as in Art & Paintings) -oils in particular; I consider myself more of an artist than a writer -I guess that’s mainly for the fact that I studied Fine Art with Related Arts more than anything else; still Artist has a lovely ring to it -so an Artist I am!
  2. I am very particular in how my tea is brewed -especially when making English Tea; (it needs to be the right colour consistency and needs adequate milk for taste) therefore in most instances I volunteer to make my own tea -it would be a shame if I have to tip the tea away if not brewed properly!
  3. When writing I subconsciously miss out small (sometimes big) words -I do not notice the missed words if I read it back in my head -therefore, I have to read what I have written out loud when editing in order to spot these missed words; they can be terrors to find!  I am certain you will spy these ‘omissions’ at times -when you do (notice how I am certain of this); do let me know so I can make the required corrections.   -I also have a tendency to switch letters or digits around such as:  hello = helol or 1976 = 1967 I eventually work out the misspelt word however; the digits prove a challenge -especially if it is a telephone number -can you see the wrong dialled numbers in your mind?!!
  4. I have been known to slip in Turkish words in sentences when speaking to someone in English and vice versa!  Sometimes I get the sense that that word is ‘English’ or ‘Turkish’ -it’s only when the recipient is baffled by my talk do I realise something is at foot -you have been warned!  Examples of such occasions can be found in this post.
  5. I’m a people’s person; I love chatting and engaging with most people -though public speaking is something I favour less; it brings out a nervous side that I cannot control.  I think this may have been heightened more when I was part of a presentation group at University and had to dress up in a jesters outfit as I was the only person who could fit into it (being 5 foot has its advantages and disadvantages!).  To top it all; I had the longest speech and the squeakiest voice (that’s how it sounded to me) -pair that with my fear -I read it in super-speed; needless to say I try my best to avoid such scenarios.

  1. I used to work in Social Care (Support Worker for the elderly and vulnerable adults); a job that is varied and kept me on my toes with the colourful customers I engaged with.  It was a job I loved and cherished dearly however, the last 2-3 years caused me undue stress and had caused negative impacts and implications on my health; therefore, I had to consider an alternative career path for myself.  Sometimes what you love is not always good for you.  I am hoping writing will not become like that, as it has literally become my saviour these past few months!  Another reason why I am loving the award Sonia and Walking The Pattern has given me -Thank you!
  2. On a positive note, my claim to fame (if you want to call it that) is:  During my retail years (I am lucky to have worked with some of the best: TopShop/TopMan, Daisy & Tom, Selfridges & Harrods).  I have served several stars -including A-listers -here’s a few names: Isla Fisher (seen at Top Shop), Patsy Palmer (served at Daisy & Tom), Cat Deeley (served at Selfridges), Martin Kemp (served at Selfridges), Angelina Jolie (served at Selfridges) and Pierce Brosnan (served at Harrods) amongst others.  (I may write a post solely on this in the near distant future; I need to ponder a bit more and see if I want to share my experiences.)
  3. I am not a natural pet lover (I evolved to liking them after a good few years).  My first and only pet was a cat named Tombis (adventures with her pertaining to transporting her in my jacket can be read here) and most recently (well, nearly three years now) I am an aunty to a mongrel-cross collie named Megan (my sister & brother-in-laws dog) and she is the cutest -as long as she does not slobber over me!
  4. Of all the mobile phones I have owned (there has been many) the Xperia10 has experienced the most (more than 10 times) battering due to it slipping out of my hands (due to its cumbersomeness).
  5. I was in Turkey when the biggest earthquake shook it in 1999, my Art degree show was based on this experience, to see an example of one of the exhibited pieces please click here.

Now you are it!

Just like the game ‘tag’ played in schools; once tagged another person(s) need to be tagged so you can be set free…  Therefore, I tag you, you and you (it’s great to know you -just want to get to know y’all better ;) ):  Pamela V Mason, Cari and Rance Denton <— Check out their blogs too; they are cool fab writer-type people. :D

Upcoming Plans & Schedule Well, that’s all for today, I shall be back on Saturday with ‘Saturday’s Showcase Sketches’ until then stay safe, happy and try to do a good deed each day (It’ll make you feel that much better -that warm glow in your heart will just shine :) ).

Whimsical Wednesday Writings:

Heya, today’s post is going to be very short (by my standards); I have no ROW80 updates to give you other than blog post word counts, chapters read for beta-reading and number of blogs I have visited; therefore, I will give you my update this Sunday coming (apologies if you were looking forward to it).  It’s not been a bad few days since Sunday -it’s just not been just as good and because of this I just don’t feel too inspired today.  -I know I am being tough on myself.

So, this is me for today, I will be back tomorrow with an award (well a tag-thingy that’s been passed on to me) and news on that newsletter publication I had mentioned a while back; in the meantime please feel free to read the last few days post.

Challenge Issued: Turner’s Tapestries (A Reminder)

Tuesday’s Triptych Tapestry:

I was hoping to have written a Flash Fiction piece for today but I’ve had a busy few days and today my head hurts so I think I need a lie down away from the laptop.  The following two weeks will also be a bit busy for me therefore, I am unsure how my articles for the blog will fair; I will do my best to plan and schedule as and when I can.  If I fail to post according to my schedule, please be understanding; I will be back on top of things as soon as I am able.  In the meantime, here is a reminder to the challenge I issued a couple of weeks ago -as well as the entries from last month’s challenge.  I hope your muse will be inspired to take the challenge.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

Challenge Issued: Turner’s Tapestries

Every month I issue a challenge to writers and artists alike; to come up with something inspired by the prompts I select and -though it’s still early days, the response I have received is delightful.  We are now into month three of issuing Flash Fiction Challenges -last month the challenge was Transparent Tapestries; these brave soul(s) rose to the challenge:

  • Sonia G. Medeiros’ story drew me with the opening line and then I was hooked; In Time -is subtle yet craftily written, a pure delight -a must read.
  • ‘s submission is a delightful read, if you have not read it yet please pop over and read the vivid imageries of Hot Chocolate -it made me want to be a kid again!
  • Me, Myself & I -As you already know, I have combined five challenges this month and it turned into: Once-Upon-A-Time -it seemed too basic to write but somehow there was something more, have a read and decide for yourself.

Sonia & Radha thank you for taking part -I hope you both enjoyed the creative journey. :D

The rules are quite simply this (I’ve made a slight amendment to the rules, please read before submitting your entry):

“Being an artist at heart, I have decided my triptych prompts will be based with an art theme running through it.  The prompts will have three parts to it:

  • Painting/Photography* by an Artist
  • Random lines of Poetry by Poets
  • An Art Movement/Writing Genre*

I will endeavour to select the above through the methods used by surrealist automatism (this will involve selecting imagery by opening books/webpage’s in a random manner).  You can choose any of the given prompts -or if you are brave and up to a challenge then use all three prompts!  The choice is yours.  Word count will be limited to 500-1000 (if it is slightly less or more I will not quibble).

*I am introducing interactive prompts selections, please take note to where I have placed an asterisk (see above); these have one or more prompt types.  Please choose a prompt (e.g., painting/photography, art movement/writing genre – my choice for this challenge would be painting and writing genre).  I will pick an image/movement/genre from the majority vote -if no votes; I will use my regular selection process).

If there are artists who feel inspired to take part with imagery or any poets who want to enter with poems -you too can join in -hey why not make it a mixed media piece!

Please ensure you provide the link to your entry in the comments of the appropriate post so we can track your entry for reading as well as for collating in the next Flash Fiction Challenge.”

In honour of our busy schedules, I will keep the challenge open for a month.  I hope this gives you enough time to ponder on possible creative works.  May your muse inspire you always…

Your three prompts for the next four weeks are as follows:

Image sourced via: www.wikimedia.org

  • A few lines of poetry:

Just when I thought I couldn’t stand it

another minute longer, Friday came.

(Accounts of that have everything all wrong.)

Friday was nice.

Friday was nice, and we were friends.

If only he had been a woman!

-Crusoe in England by Elizabeth Bishop

  • Art Movement: none -for this month, rather than go along with an Art Movement I have decided to select a Writing Genre instead; for this challenge your genre is Comic Fantasy.

*If you are looking to enter with a Poem or a Visual Image then the word count is not applicable (having said that; fellow Poets, if you are generous with your words then maybe keep in mind to not over-exceed the maximum word allowance).

Well that’s the rules, the deadline is at midnight GMT on 3rd September 2011 (I will be collating all entries in the next Triptych Tapestry which is scheduled to be posted 4th September 2011).

Enjoy and above all have fun!

In the meantime, if you want to test yourself and the voices of the characters you come up with why don’t you take a gander at this game I have devised:  A Fun Game – In Your Head.  I hope to be back with a ROW80 update tomorrow (let’s see how plans fair), until then have a brilliant day.

A Glitch in the System

Savvy Sunday Salutations:

Dearest readers, I am late in posting this article today (I decided to have a few days off and now here I am Sunday morning trying to put together a post worth reading -hmmm; maybe I’m just pushing my luck a wee bit).  I have some (very little) news from Patrick Tulley; we have not discussed full reasons of his absence, but it seems he has a little too much going on at his end, I will keep you updated as and when I know more, until then you have to put up with me.  :D   Last week I talked about JMW Turner; this week (due to the time-constraint I have restricted on myself) I will continue with Turner -well I just want to concentrate on that anecdote I had left you with; that story has stayed with me since A-Level Art & Design, I feel it’s only fair I give it some deserved dues.

My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to :P ).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

LESSONS FROM TURNER -PART DUEX:

There has been many things said about Turner -and no doubt, many more will be said.  -I know I said that last week, thought a bit of déjà vu was in order -you know the saying:

“A déjà vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix…”

-Trinity, The Matrix (1999)

-well that’s me all over; a permanent glitch hanging over my head this Sunday; this translates into two things:

1) I just have to put up with it; and most importantly,

2) You just have to deal with it.  :P

For those who are asking, yes I loved The Matrix; very clever -it paved the way for the preceding films we’ve seen since -another forerunner in its’ industry; but today we are not talking about The Matrix.  Today we go back to Turner; remember that little story I shared with you last week, here it is again for those who missed it:

“It has been said that, Turner would have himself tied to the mast of a sailing ship whilst at sea to experience the storms so he could relay it into his paintings.”

From this anecdote, it is easy to visualise Turner conjuring up these masterpieces:

Shipwreck by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Slave Ship by Joseph Mallord William Turner

Both very different -yet very similar; the dynamics vary ever so slightly; yet that change makes a remarked difference.  In the first painting, there’s movement with an uncanny stillness in the darkness of the night sky -you can feel the waves tossing, the ship battling against the torrents yet there is an odd calmness which I cannot place; almost as if despite the conditions the crew and passengers are safe.  Then the second painting, with its vague-blurred lines gives that sense of gusto, panic and drowning under the most beautiful of skies -an impression of a moment -possibly captured as the anecdote portrays, a man tied to a mast taking in the moment; being whole with its subject -whatever the conditions may be, ironic or otherwise…  When we feed this idea into writing, we can see a similarity, -our characters.  To get to know them, to really get into their skins we become them -in parts or as wholes (some through experience some through research); we feel their pain, their love, their angst’s, their drive.  -When we are so close to our characters as Turner was to his subject; does that not make you feel that you have something solid, believable and writeable?  To create a masterpiece one needs to be fully immersed into their work -they must believe what they create or else it will fall away like dust…

Finally, as I leave Turner here, I want to share with you the painting that made me fall in love with Turner and on the next ‘Lessons from Turner’ (this will not always be on a Sunday, so keep an extra eye out on Monday’s, Thursday’s and possibly Friday’s too), I will do my best to interpret the painting and add some insight on how a picture can tell a thousand words.  Until then why don’t you analyse the painting and come up with your own thoughts.

Rain, Steam & Speed - The Great Western Railway by JMW Turner

ROW80 UPDATE:

If you want to see my progress-at-a-glance (from the first week through to now with all my goals -amendments included) please head on over to my ROW80-Round 3 page.

Overview since Wednesday:  This week has been a bit bleh with regards to word counts for Becoming- Mystical Realisations, but it has been productive nonetheless as I have been thinking and plotting about how to devise the next chapter(s).  I have to do some outlining as parts of the story had to change; so no words but some development on the story -albeit brewing in my head; this is a good thing.

In brief, here’s what I have achieved since Wednesday:

WIP word count:  0 /1,000

DiRosaYikici word count: 0/1,000

Blog post word count:  2514 /1,000

Combined effort word count:  2514 /1,000

Progress up until 11th September 2011:

WIP word count:  7,268 /40,000

Blog post word count:  29,618 /40,000

DiRosaYikici word count:  597 /40,000

Combined effort word count:  37,483 /40,000 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)

Blogs visited (ROW80′ers & Writecampaign’ers):  37 in total

Beta-reader project:  On Chapter Six (that’s page 26 of 204)

I guess it has not been a bad week per se; though I always hope my WIP would speed up more than my blog posts -I know I should not grumble.  What with a slow start to today’s post, we find ourselves at the end of it, which means this is ta-raaa from me, I’ll be back on Tuesday with a Flash Fiction Challenge ;) I hope to see you then.

In the meantime, if you want to test yourself and the voices of the characters you come up with why don’t you take a gander at this game I have devised:  A Fun Game – In Your Head.  Have a fab Sunday and a great week following; till Tuesday adios amigos.

A Fun Game – In Your Head

Frivolous Fun Friday:

Hello glorious, fabulous readers & visitors alike! :D   Before I start off on the game I have planned for today, I want to share something that made me chuckle.  It seems ever since I have gone self-hosting (nearly a month now); spammers of various size and forms have decided to attack my site.  –Where before I had a total of 97 spam comments in the space of 4.5 months  on my previous wordpress.com account; now, it seems the pesky blighters have decided to up their game and in the space of a mere month(ish) I have the impressive count of 114 spam comments.  *scratches head in bewilderment* I am unsure, if this counts as something positive or not but I do have some solace as my last spammer -supposedly a-Marty Feldman, kindly parted with these encouraging words on my Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign page -I quote:

“Pulitzer prize substance here.”

Oh my! *looks around in excitement* ‘you really and truly think so? Oooo now I must get some sort of acceptance speech together -hey!  No need to be such a meanie!’  *pouts* ‘I was dreaming of the possibilities, I am soooo touched by the lovely suggestion.‘ *dabs tears with handkerchief* -are you feeling the love also?  I surely am; spammers or not -who cares, it certainly put a smile on my face and a spring in my steps. :D   I may not be of Pulitzer Prize material (a girl can dream), but it’s good to know somewhere out there a-Marty Feldman-deceased *ahem* thinks I am worthy of such a honour. *beams a gracious smile then winks* what are your spammers like?  Any quirky, fun, polite, wacky, courteous, advice seeking, advice giver, constant sales reps’ -or like mine; totally complimentary? ;)   I’d love to hear any fun/bizarre anecdotes.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

Let the Fun Game Begin…

Now back to today’s post.  Today I want ‘us’ to play a game, -why?  Because I just do -besides, games are fun and today is intended for some frivolous fun.  The game in particular is called ‘In Your Head’ (it’s a made-up game devised by me).  For this game I want to you to create one or two characters -you can choose an existing character(s) of yours; but I’d recommend a new one because in the following weeks we will be swapping the characters with each other in order to test out a theory of mine.  (I’ll get to the theory later -they say patience is a virtue :P ).  Ok, keep thinking up possible character(s); whilst you are pondering, I want you to take this setting into consideration:

Setting:  A small quiet village approx 200 miles from the nearest city adorned with thatched cottages and surrounded by vast empty fields.  Not much happens here, except for their festival –the festival of colour, this happens once a year; tourists and families from afar visit, no one misses this event.  This is the highlight of the year for the villagers; they prepare for this the whole year.

How’s it going so far?  Need to digest it?  Sure, in the meantime let me delve into the whys and hows…  I actually got inspired to create this game after three random occurrences fell my way.

  1. I read a post on Voice Week by Billie Jo Woods and it intrigued me to the point I am now considering to take part and see if I can manage the task they are setting; fundamentally it’s a challenge to see if you can use different voices in your works, click here if you are interested.
  2. I read a post by Jody Moller on Character Meme -it is a fun piece that actually started me to think about the concept of In Your Head.
  3. Since starting this writing adventure, I have been told by a few fellow writers/friends that my stories have good voices.  This made me wonder why (ok, yes I was (am) chuffed for such delightful comments; but I am a natural thinker)…  So, I began to wonder why I was getting it right -for the purpose to understand what my skill sets are and to hone in on them.  I finally realised -well, I think I’ve known this subconsciously for most of my adult life; I’m one of those people who tries to understand where the other person I am engaging with is coming from (not a literal place mind you) -their thought patterns.  I keep asking why are they acting like that, I wonder what causes them to do things…etc…  -You get the idea; yep, I am a thinker; which I think benefits the purpose of being a writer -but I digress, let’s get back to the game.

In Your Head

Now let’s think back to the setting and the character(s) that will take part in that setting (go on have another read if you must -then come back here); back and ready?  Good, now I want you to devise a short dialogue of about 200-300 words -this can be in any genre you feel comfortable with.  Ok so far?  Excellent, now listen carefully, do not post this little exercise until I say so -or else the fun will be lost.  The key point of this game is your character(s), I want you to build them as you would any other character, get to know them inside and out, their likes, their hates etc -jot it all down and keep this for the second round of this game (that’ll be in two weeks time).  Great, now that you know your character(s); write them in into that 200-300 piece of writing, make sure the following points are included and acted out within the dialogue (this is still in line with my theory):

  • No children live in the village.
  • A child hides in a barn and stays after the festivities.
  • Your character(s) interacts with the child.
  • The child has a secret.
  • Add a surprise of your own -in keeping with your character(s) profile.

Ok, with these guidelines in mind build your character(s).  Note:  Try to keep away from stereotypes -if you cannot then add a quirky character trait; this will help the game be more fun and hopefully challenge you all.  Remember, no sharing your dialogues or character(s) until I say so.  Now get those character(s) and dialogue a-ready; think, plot and come back in two weeks time; I will reveal the next stage of the game.  Before you disappear, please let us know if you would be joining in with the game by adding a comment below -just so we know.  The more the merrier! :D

If you have any questions, please ask me below in the comment box or via the contact details below.

Before I forget, this game is for fun so sadly there are no prizes; but if it proves popular and there’s a demand for it to be played again in the future, I’ll keep a note and consider it then.

Have a fab-tastic Friday and a wondrous weekend.  Keep that positivity-a-glowing and your smile forever shining -stay in peace.

A Tiny Note:  This game will be played in three stages; this is stage one.  Stage two is in a fortnight (23/09/2011) and stage three is two weeks after that (07/10/2011).  I will let you in on my theory in two weeks time.

A Mixed Bag of News, Updates & the First Campaign Challenge

Whimsical Wednesday Writings:

Oh, a golly gosh and a helloooo there! :D (Now, I bet you were thinking that’s a blast from the past.)  Anyhoo, I have some exciting news to share with you today, a ROW80 update and stories, stories galore -you are in for a treat!  So, without any further ado, sit comfortably and take in the delights whilst I grab myself a cuppa. :)

Please feel free to scroll down to the sections that are of interest to you  -that is if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to :P ).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

ROW80 Update

Firstly, let us start with a ROW80 update…  It has been a positive week (for some reason radiance is sprouting all around me); I’ve been writing away, sticking to goals -and doing my best to visit fab blogs (it’s been hectic but fun) and keeping up with Twitter.  Here’s a glimpse of what I have achieved and decided to take on:

Blogs I have visited and commented on since Sunday:

  • ROW80′ers: 5 blogs
  • Writers’ Platform-Building Campaigners: 23 blogs

Apologies; I will be rectifying this from today onwards (I was blogged out Friday and Saturday then had a busy few days at home) *hopes I can be forgiven*

Added goals with some musings:

  • I don’t know why but I should really add the word counts for the stories I write over at DiRosaYikici (it’s raw, quite rough and needs some editing -but Di Rosa and I are just having fun with the continuation of the contemporary tales -as, are our readers; so we just keep on going.  (It was my turn to update Where There’s a Will There’s a Way this week, so check it out in the stories section below).
  • Volunteered to be a beta reader (my first beta reading experience); I hope I do a good job of it; it requires feedback by next week so guess what I’ll be doing after writing this?  Yep, that’s correct.
  • Being proactive with our newly formed critique group; a group of four writers and bloggers alike have formed a nifty critique group and we are finalising how we will work together, so I aim to be quite proactive with that too.

Progress Since Sunday 4th September 2011:

WIP word count:  350 words written.

Blog post word count:  733 + 1521 words written.

DiRosaYikici word count:  597 words written.

Combined effort word count:  3201 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)

That’s like 1000 words per day –not bad; dare I say on target? *cheers*

Exciting News

A little while ago, I read a very insightful post on Haley Whitehall’s blog it was about reviewing your work with a critical eye and looking at the shift of power within a scene or two.  This post was written by the talented Tiffany Lawson Inman (AKA the @NakedEditor over on Twitter -go on follow her for editing tips etc -you know you want to).  Tiffany set a competition for us to take part in -I took a gamble and entered the competition, which Tiffany was hosting on her blog.  (Sadly the competition is closed, but Tiffany has told me that she will be hosting a few more competitions leading up to Camp NaNoWriMo, so why don’t you pop over to her blog and check out what she’s up to -I truly recommend it), and I won! *dances a jig, stops, looks up* ‘Aren’t you joining me?:P   So, come October I’ll be busy studying *wonders if I’ve drawn the short straw* -oh man that’s like extra work Tiffany! (I’m only kidding; I’m looking forward to it.) :D

Stories, stories, stories…

Now comes the fun part!  Today, I have three stories (and a surprise) to share with you, the first two, as you know, are updates on the storyline to the ongoing saga over at DiRosaYikici, please head on over to the blog and read what Gina and Tracy are up to in:

Where there’s a Will there’s a Way (read entry number 17 -bottom of the page) – Battered and bruised, will Tracy find a way to reach out to Katie?

Our Story Begins (updated by Di Rosa) – I will update this next week, for those who want to find out what happened to Gina after a night out with Nathanial James, please head on over for a catch-up.

The third story I want to share is a flash fiction piece inspired by  Rachael Harrie’ challenge for the Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign.  You all know I love challenges -the tougher the better, so I had to take part.

Rachael Harrie’ first campaigner challenge is as thus:

“Write a short story/flash fiction story in 200 words or less, excluding the title. It can be in any format, including a poem. Begin the story with the words, “The door swung open” These four words will be included in the word count.

If you want to give yourself an added challenge (optional), use the same beginning words and end with the words: “the door swung shut.” (also included in the word count)

For those who want an even greater challenge, make your story 200 words EXACTLY!

A challenge must always be challenging, guess what I chose to do?  Yep, I took the extreme option.  I hope it works; I ended up writing two flash fictions, I couldn’t submit both so I picked the following, I hope it was the right choice…  What do you think?*  I give you…

The Patient Mind

The door swung open; I waited patiently as always; I waited, I waited…  it just swung back and forth in the wind; Sally smiled down on me “It’s time you stopped this you know.”

I shook my head “’tis not time, I must now count to a hundred.”

“It won’t change” she pressed my shoulders gently as she left.

I waited, watching the breeze filter the leaves in and out, I counted.

Sally came again, I counted two hundred, then three, then four; “it won’t change,” she said again.  I knew, in my heart I knew, it would, but I couldn’t tell Sally, she didn’t know; she didn’t know the nights, the nights it changed; it promised it’ll change today; it promised yesterday and the day before; it promised, so it must, I knew, in my heart I knew.  Sally walked past, she walked past every day, said the same things, she never went away.  “It won’t change,” she taunted; she screamed in my head; that Sally needs to see how it will change, it promised it would.

Today Sally stopped by the door; it came; a grin spread across my face as she stepped outside; the door swung shut.

(For the ever inquisitive the word count excluding the title is 200 words –with it its 203.)

*If you like ‘The Patient Mind’ and want to cast your vote I’m number 198 on the Linksy List <— click here to read all the fantastic entries.

Surprise:  If you was wondering what didn’t make the cut I’ve added it (The Calling…) below just for fun (Please Note:  this piece is not being submitted to the challenge).  Before we read ‘The Calling’, I wanted to say this story is actually inspired by two challengers: Billie Jo Woods over at Out of the Woods and Rachael Harrie’ challenge for the Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign (as above). You all know I love combining challenges so this was no exception.

Billie Jo Woods set the September challenge to go back to school, her rules are:

  • Make sure your story takes place in a school.
  • Keep it to roughly 500 words (although if you need more that is okay too).

It’s odd as the moment I saw the opening line for Rachael Harrie’ challenge this story wove itself with Billie Jo’ challenge -its’ as if it were meant to be… (That’s why it was difficult to choose one story for the Campaign Challenge, nevertheless, I guess now that means one submission to the Campaign (The Patient Mind) and one submission to Billie Jo’ September Challenge (The Calling…)  What are your thoughts? I present…

The Calling…

The door swung open.  We gasped as they shrugged off their skins whilst gliding into the classroom.

“It’s as simple as that.” It said towering over us –with its extended limbs hovering hypnotically.

It was a routine drill, they were recruiting –so they say; it had become the norm ever since he –Mr Carmichael chose…

There’s been rumours since his disappearance that he and it are one of the same, but I couldn’t be certain –not Mr Carmichael, he wouldn’t –it was in my face; my vision blurred instantly as I gulped, sweat droplets seemed to sprout in quick succession as they sang with alarm, please don’t take me, please don’t take me.

“Maybe you should volunteer this time, it’s only fair –saves the pain for the rest of them; it’d be a pity if we had to kill them all -when it’s you we need.”  Its words slithered and tightened round my throat as huge dumbbells came crashing down on me, realisation sinking in as I gasped for air.

“Your calling is coming my dear boy,” he had said last semester, “when the time comes, you must choose.”  My insides knotted as Mr Carmichael entered, the door swung shut.

(The word count excluding the title is 200 words –with it its 202.)

So, that’s all for today, I will be back on Friday with a Frivolous Fun post, I hope you pop back then.

Recycling -but not as you know it…

Monday’s Meandering Muse:

A fabulous hello to you all -my lovely readers.  I am sat in front of my laptop, typing away whilst sipping a hot mug of Chinese tea (jasmine tea to some of you); you can say I’m multi-tasking if you like.  I call it just being comfortable with the addition of being in a great mood to write (therefore, I cannot guarantee what length this post will be, so let’s see together).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

Out with the Old and in with the New(ish)

Image sourced from: ThisNext.com

I have been in talks with a few writers and bloggers and it seems, at times, there’s moments of ‘blankness’ -nope I am not calling it writers’ block. We, writers fall under the assumption that we suffer from that curse , but I assure you, there’s no such thing -it’s all in the mind -really and truly; we just hide behind it when we are not 100% and can’t get into writing.  Let me give you an example, since blogging, I have had to think of different topics to  discuss and share with you; there have been times when I have sat in front of my laptop and thought ‘I cannot think of what to write,‘ 9 out of 10 times that was caused because of my low moods -not my inability to find a topic to discuss.  Therefore, I am certain that all writers’ suffer from a similar bout of ‘blankness’.

Enough said now where was I?  Oh yes, so I was pondering, as I always do; thinking what suggestions I could come up with then it hit me in the face (no not literally silly!); when I was clearing out that box (you know the box where I found my old dissertation; see yesterdays post), I stumbled across all my assignments and course notes.  You thinking what I am thinking?  Yep, exactly, it’s a perfect place to start from; I agree, it’s old and maybe it needs redrafting -you probably write better now too, but essentially it will give you ideas which you can work on, develop further and, the most important aspect of it is, you can share it with us; make it into something new(ish). :)   From Turner’s dissertation alone I came up with an idea of ‘Lessons from Turner’ and I am thinking of developing that into a short series, as there are many more insights from him that I would like to share with you.  I can even see ways of adapting his methods in to the writing world; so keep your eyes out for that.  For those who have not been to University, don’t fret, look through your school/college/short course notes -or even things you have researched for work, etc -you get the idea, recycle what you have learnt; think of it as the three R’s:  Re-learn, re-write, recycle -oh, don’t forget to share your newfound inspiration with us :)

My Questions to You

Where do you get your inspirations?  How would you revive old news?  Any tips you would like to share with us?

This post has been short, sweet and to the point :) My next post will be on Wednesday (a ROW80 update –hopefully I will have WIP word counts to share *excited*), I will also post you details of the stories I’m working on over at DiRosaYikici; until then have fun, stay safe and smile always.  The world is as good as you make it, so live life to its potential and cherish every moment.

Lessons from Turner & ROW80

Savvy Sunday Salutations:

Dearest readers, I know some of you are looking forward to reading more insights from Patrick Tulley, unfortunately I have been unable to get in contact with him (he may have taken a holiday and failed to let me know *tut tut*), I’ll keep you updated when I know more.  In the meantime, I will open this Sunday slot to a few of my favourite bloggers and every now and again I will send some salutation love to people I admire in this lovely world we live in.  Last week my grandmother took centre stage and today, as promised, I will introduce you a pioneer in the Art world, my first choice Artist of all time is JMW Turner.  Those who know me will not be surprised with this decision of mine and for those who don’t, you shall soon learn muhaawaawaaaaah -or something to that effect. :D

My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to ).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

LESSONS FROM TURNER:

Discussions from the past…

Why Turner?  Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was and is still one of the most important British Landscape painters.  My interest in his work began when I was doing my ‘A-levels’ at college.  Although I had looked at many other artists in the preceding years, I have always come back to Turner, each time examining a different aspect of his work.  Again, I am drawn back; this time taking Turner as a colourist, investigating how he used his colour and how Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) influenced him.  Turner was a master of innovations, especially in terms of colour.  I consider Turner to be the grandfather of the Impressionists.  I believe he was a colourist ahead of his time and this is the theme I based my study on.  I have investigated how Turner’s work progressed in relationship to colour and light.  I believe I have achieved this by comparing Turner to other artists who have influenced him such as Richard Wilson (1714-1782) and Claude Lorrain (1600-1682).  These comparisons have enabled me to show how Turner’s use of colour changed gradually from his early work to his later work.  I believe I have successfully achieved this in my study by arranging Turner’s artistic career -of about sixty years, into three periods:  Firstly, his ‘early-years’ as a topographical student (1788-1812).  Secondly, his ‘mid-years’ when he developed mastery skills in landscape compositions as well as developing his individual artistic style (1812-1835), and finally his ‘late-period’ consists of working with the ‘sublime’ in an abstract way, using colour as the focal point (1835-1851).

In my study, I have investigated how Turner managed to create atmosphere using only colour and paint.  I have discussed how Turner used mystical landscapes and why they were so full of light.  I also aimed to find out how important Turner’s subject matter was to him, and if this changed as he matured.  In conjunction to this, I have also attempted to answer the following questions: ‘was colour and light the only thing that mattered to him in his later years?  If so, ‘did it take over the subject-matter of his paintings?’ “

…so was my opening chapter of my dissertation (thesis)…  I know, I cheated *blushes* -I was going to write something new but as I was clearing through my boxed stuff, I came across my dissertation and thought it was rather ironic and apt that I stumbled across this whilst I was in preparations to write a piece on Turner.  I re-read it (as you do) and thought the introduction chapter would best explain why Turner is my favourite artist and also it gives you a taster of what he is about…  Don’t worry I will not be writing the remaining chapters of my thesis here -that would be taking liberties.

Dido Building Carthage The Rise of the Carthaginian Empire by JMW Turner

Today, I want to discuss another aspect of Turner that I find admirable -his work ethics.  Turner started off as an eager topographical student, he studied hard and this, with his status allowed him a place within the ranks of the Royal Academy elitists.  It is interesting to note that Turner did not care for this ‘pretentious’ gathering but he was shrewd and knew he needed to be part of them in order to excel and make a living out of his art.  Turner kept in with the ‘in-crowd’, produced the works that would ‘sell’ -he was one of the few lucky (or shall we say clever) artists’ who actually reaped the benefits of his talents whilst he was alive.  Turner was smart; he understood that in the society he lived in, his vision of light would be frowned upon, so he deliberately kept these out from the critics eyes (though some lesser shocking ones he did exhibit and in turn was criticized severely).

Turner had travelled a long distance where his career was concerned.  He was undoubtedly, a genius in the making; he always seemed to be one-step ahead.  He knew how to get the recognition he wanted and played along with the rest of the Art World to get where he wanted.  He studied and persevered when all the critics were against him.  His vision of light had opened up new possibilities of abstraction, which was evident in Crossing the Brook (one of this months flash fiction prompts) and Dido Carthage.  With these and the vast amount of paintings/studies he Bequest in his will to the nation, Turner paved the way for Modern Art and its artists -especially the Impressionists.

There’s much said about Turner and possibly more to discuss; amongst which are lessons to be learnt.  To get to where we want to be we must study; stretch our minds and abilities.  We must not allow the critics to break us; if we need to improve, that’s what we must do; if we fall down we must learn to pick ourselves up as they say ‘sticks and stones…’  If we are ahead of our time (wouldn’t that be nice) -let’s take a leaf out from Turner’s book, let us embody our work, develop it but at the same time, work  within the constraints’ of the industry; when there’s an opening in the market and our style is applauded then let all hell break-loose.

Before I move on, I want to leave you with one thought about Turner…  It has been said that, Turner would have himself tied to the mast of a sailing ship whilst at sea to experience the storms so he could relay it into his paintings.  Are you that committed?  How far would you go for your artistic drive?

ROW80 UPDATE:

I have some update on Becoming, I am getting some more feedback from my beta reader, which is constructive, this has put me in a better mood.  The additions I made to the story plot (I had to introduce some characters earlier than I initially planned to), seems to work better so that is good news.  I was also worrying I was telling more than showing, but it seems I am more of a harsh critic of my work; I’ve been told the balance is right -yay; note to myself *must not be so hard on myself*.  With this positivity and the reminder of Turner’s remarkable work ethics, I believe more work on Becoming will be in the pipeline.  I hope that on Wednesday my WIP word count will rise *prays*.

If you want to see my progress-at-a-glance please head on over to my ROW80-Round 3 page.

New Goals (Tweaked & Lessons Learnt):

In line with my positivity, I am moving the goal posts (as the current combined blog/WIP word count is shattered -see below).  My previous ROW80 goals will remain the same as they are working for me; I just want to add:

  • Aimed combined word count for the last two weeks will be 40,000 (I’m sure I can manage another 10,000 within the remaining timeframe -what do you think?).
  • Visiting and commenting on at least 5 ROW80′ers blogs per check-in -for huge cheers; lets cheer all together! :D
  • Visiting and commenting on at least 5 Campaigners blogs too (daily -may need a rethink for this, watch this space) -let me hear you say ‘yeah’ *grins*

It seems I have been concentrating too much on my blog posts and not on my novel -and my ROW80-Round 3 page has highlighted this clearly in black and white so I took heed and amended my blog schedule so I can work in some time for my novel.  Yippieeeeeeeee!

Progress up until 4th September 2011:

WIP word count:  6,918 /28,000

Blog post word count:  24,850 /28,000

Combined effort word count:  31,768 /28,000 (See the ROW80 progress bar on the side menu.)

Well, that’s me done for today, I’ll be back on Monday with a muse or two ;) I’ll see you then, stay inspired and if your down in the dumps, remember Turner’s fighting spirit and do not be afraid to explore your skills, you may be a pioneer like Turner one day. *Wishful thinking*

Memories…

Saturday’s Showcase Sketches:

It’s been a while since I last shared a poem with you and so today, I want to take you down memory lane; last Sunday I wrote a post on my grandmother, today I want to share with you a poem inspired by gran…  Please enjoy this moment and take a journey back into my childhood…

Memories

This rose has the same smell as the rose water my grandmother uses,

she uses it for its natural essence.

She smells of the garden, where the children are playing;

an innocent game of ‘hide & seek’.

It reminds me when I used to play,

shouting “I’ve found you, now you are it!”

The joy, the excitement, the rush of it all,

it seems like it was not long ago.

Then amidst the chaos we hear a car,

running up to where we are;

we stop our game, ’till it has passed

-another car to hide behind!

Just as we start, I hear gran call;

It’s time to come in and have something to eat.”

I run to the entrance and climb up the steps

it’s this tall, white building -so elegantly made.

The door is ajar, to dry the floor -which the caretaker cleaned just before.

As I go in, I enter a hall with post-boxes on one side of the wall.

The door to my house, is slightly ajar,

gran left it open as she sat inside.

As I step in, I’m facing the lounge -it takes half the size of the whole house.

Through the narrow hallway I go,

to where my gran is sitting alone;

she’s knitting -like she always does, knitting something for you or I.

When she sees me, all she says; is “set the table, I’m on my way“.

When I’ve eaten, I get up soon

I walk through the hallway, go into my room;

my wallpaper’s full with prints of children;

I can hear their cries of joy and laugher,

playing games with  one and other…

I found myself looking outside to the yard

to where my friends were gathering around,

they’ve just finished playing the game;

and now it’s time to go home for the day.

ROW80 is getting (me) Organised!

Thursday’s (Belated) Topical Tête-à-Tête:

Firstly, I want to say I am saddened by what I have seen in the news and what ordeals you have had to face on the East Coast.  I have just seen reports of another bout of storms; hurricane Katia and a tropical cyclone on the Gulf :( I do hope these do not come inland and cause any destructions; you are all in my thoughts and prayers, I do wish you all to stay safe and out of harm’s way.  Image sourced from: http://www.gsauve.com/blogI’m sending you all a little something -I hope it brings you good luck; the Irish swear by it.  Secondly, I want to apologise for the lateness of this post (I seem to have lost my synch with my daily routine -hope to get back on form soon(ish) -I have been working on my schedule at least, so that is something positive, for more details see below).  Today’s topical discussion is rotating about how things stand with me in relation to the writing world -I thought it is rather apt considering my recent sign-up to the Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign.

I have had an odd few weeks and I am certain you all are aware of how erratic I have been (maybe erratic is the wrong word choice, but I’m tired and that’s the closest word I can find, so I’m sticking to it) -the word erratic is more geared at my working pattern rather than my own person…  There has not been much stability on that front and I worked out why thanks to my new ROW80 page and progress bars over on the right of this page -now why did I not do that sooner!  It seems I have been allocating a lot of my time to writing blog posts as opposed to my actual Novel (no wonder that’s been a wee bit stagnant *shakes head in bewilderment*); therefore, I have had a rethink and made slight amendments to the schedule -just so I can breathe a bit better; I was beginning to suffocate -Eak!  So, that’s sorted and taken off my ‘to do list’ (geez, there’s so many things to do -I think I’m going to see stars) *faints* -ok, okaaaaaaaaaaay I was pulling your leg. :P Now let’s get back to some serious stuff…

Flash -A-aaaaaaaaaaaaa

Don’t ask me why, but that song (yes the one from the rather cheesy film Flash Gordon) is playing in my head over and over again -I just had to use it as a title because, I want to talk about -yep, you guessed it, FLASH Fictions.  (I know, I know -very bad sense of humour; but I’m tired -that’s my excuse and I am sticking to it!)  As you know, I have become addicted to writing flash fictions and now the collection of stories has amalgamated to a total of 10+(ish) since I started back in April 2011 (word count being 6125 in total).  From your responses, there has been a few stories which cried out to be expanded further and the other stories were appreciated as they were.  As time progressed I began to think about these, and one of my main thoughts were (and still is) is to collate them in a book as a collection of short stories; some I’d work on (e.g. Moon of Change being a firm favourite amongst you all) and those that work well without any developments will just be edited to perfection.  Therefore, the question on everyone’s lips (including mine); which of the following stories would you like to see being collated in this book project of mine I am about to embark upon:

A Demise of my Own Doing

First Impressions

The Quest for the Hidden Dagger

My Safe Haven

The Keepsake

Moon of Change & Moon of Change – The Prologue & Epilogue

St Pauls at High Tide

Ferocious Fireworks

Once-Upon-A-Time

I’d appreciate it if you could select your top 5 and list them in preference order and let me know which one’s you’d like me to developed further.  Please note them in the comment box below or email me directly at ozlem@yikici.co.uk -I aim to ensure the forthcoming collection’s word count is near 10,000 words; which means there will be a couple of surprise stories/snippets added to make the count.  To make this interesting and give you some incentive to participate, I believe a contest is in order (my very first one); I will select 5 people’s name from the list of commenter’s’ below and they will receive a copy of my book once it is published.  Exciting huh?  Well, what are you waiting for… get-a-voting-and-a-compiling… :D

and Finally…

Before, I head off to the land of Zzzzzzz’s (which I need to get going to very soon(ish)); this is for those who missed my very first interview over at meanderfit.com -aptly titled ‘Ozlem Yikici – The London Novelist‘.  If you want to find out how the interview went please pop over to Mindi’ blog and have a read -as well as a wander…  Well, that’s me done and dusted -so to speak, wishing you all a good night and I will no doubt have words on Saturday, until then, stay safe, be happy, keep smiling and don’t forget it’s a beautiful world out there in the vast universe we call Earth! :)

Challenge Issued: Turner’s Tapestries & a Campaign

Third Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign

Copyright © JYS at A Writerly Pensheep

Before I issue you with another tantalizing triptych tapestry (I know, but please be patient), I wanted to announce that I will be taking part in the Third Writers’ Platform-Building Campaign (I’m really excited).  The what?  -I hear you ask…  To tell the truth I had not heard about the campaign either -not until Anne-Mhairi Simpson mentioned it on her blog -Anne-Mhari thanks for the heads-up. :D Essentially, from what I gather, it’s a platform where writers of all kind interact with each other (similar to ROW80 but with no set goals -other than engaging with each other and building platforms together by sharing experiences and advice etc, etc, etc…).  I am hoping this will teach me more and hopefully I will become more focused and network better and effectively as well as sharing my newfound wisdom with you all.  For more information, please head over to Rachael Harrie’s blog.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

Tuesday’s Triptych Tapestry:

  • Me, Myself & I -As you already know, I have combined five challenges this month and it turned into: Once-Upon-A-Time -it seemed to basic to write but somehow there was something more, have a read and decide for yourself.

Sonia thank you for taking part -I hope you enjoyed the creative journey.

Bittersweet ROW80 Goals Cherished with Love

Savvy Sunday Salutations:

It seems I have misplaced Patrick Tulley -or he may have gone AWOL; it won’t be long before I send out a search warrant ;) in the meantime, I’d like to to take this opportunity to pay homage to someone who as had a great influence in my life -some of you may think that person is JMW Turner -but no (keep an eye out for him this Tuesday and possibly next Sunday).  The person I have on the tip of my tongue is someone I cherish dearly and love to bits; today I want to talk about my grandma…

My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to :P ).

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

CHERISHED WITH LOVE:

Copyright © Ozlem Yikici 2011 & Copyright © doodllz™ 2011. All Rights Reserved.

We all have someone we look up to, love and respect -and many of us have more than just that one person.  One of my special people is my grandmother, there has been moments where I have argued with her (when I did not get my way as a child) but many of my memories of my grandma is fond and full of warmth.  She is a strong woman who has brought up four children as a widower, maintained her farm in her village (Artvin Yusufeli Kιlιçkaya), became a midwife to many children, earned the respect of her peers (family & community), moved around to different parts of Turkey (even came to the UK) -my first memories are from when she was living in Istanbul.  A well travelled, well loved and above all a well respected individual who instilled good values into people’s hearts with her love of faith.  Whenever I go to Turkey, whomever I meet; always asks of my grandmother and whenever she goes to Istanbul to stay with my aunt -most days/nights there are visitor popping by to show her their respects.  I rarely see this kind of homage here in the UK (although I know of a few individuals who have a similar closeness with their family and community).  My gran is now too old to travel (no one knows exactly her right age but last I asked I was told she was at least 98 years of age -that was a year ago); in the last few years she has began to show signs of dementia, though this does not hinder her inner beauty or her-now-childlike banter.  There’s something about my gran that warms my heart and brings a tear to my eye…

My gran is also a feisty character (in a mellow-type-way -don’t ask, she just manages to be feisty but not, if that makes sense :) ).  I remember last year when I was over in Turkey and it was the month of Ramadan (just like this month) -despite her old age and ailments, she insisted on fasting and at times refused to eat when dinner was ready.  :D I guess now that the month of Ramadan is coming to an end and the feast festival of Eid-al-Fitr is upon us, my thoughts have gone back to my gran.  This has brought out the love I cherish for her and also some bittersweet memories and because of this I have shared my thoughts and love for this uniquely special woman.  You must have someone as special in your life; I’d love to hear your thoughts and anecdotes…

BITTERSWEET ROW80 UPDATE:

Since my last update I have not written anything towards Becoming (I share your sentiments exactly *tuts*) however, my blog word counts have amounted to 3071 + 878 (the ROW80 page -see below) + 903 (today’s post) -so that already over the 0-500 daily word count so I’m happy *cheers*.  Although, there has been no movement on Becoming, I have created a page for ROW80 as I promised to do so; please hover over the Social Interactions tab (menu header above) -you will see the ROW80 section there.  Despite the lack of word counts towards my Novel, there has been development on the written word at least -and taking heed and strength from my beloved grandma, I am humbled to say I have achieved a bittersweet goal today.  How has your week held up?  I know some fellow ROW80′ers have had tough weeks, but I am certain its being washed away as we speak and a new day-is-a-dawning for all, stay positive and keep on writing -I salute you all. :)

Challenge Taken: Once-Upon-A-Time

Saturday’s Showcase Sketches:

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I have been working on this month’s flash fiction challenge -again I’ve tried something different and hope it reads well, I may need to re-edit at some point as I still see it as a possible longer piece; some more depth is needed methinks and also more work with weaving in purism…  Anyhoo, I will let you be the judge on that also -so please let me know your thoughts and I’ll take them on board. :)   Now back to the challenges at hand and also the lovely challengers.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

The challenge(s) I am aiming to meet are as follows:

Challenger No 1:  Ken Broad (has serious magical powers) issued another fab picture prompt (see somewhere below) and his challenge rules can be viewed here.

Challenger No 2:  Billie Jo Woods (always surprises me with challenging challenges -are you really trying to push my boundaries?) set the question ‘Where did I come from?’, click here for her rules.

Challenger No 3:  Sonia G. Medeiros (I salute thee who’s challenges as well as stories are as fresh and compelling as the next one) challenged us to create doorways -here’s her rules.

Challenger No 4:  Haley Whitehall (introduced me to flash fictions and now I’m addicted -so you can blame her -go on -I do :P ) challenge involved aspects of dreams and the various forms of it, for more insight on her rules click here.

Challenger No 5:  Little Moi (couldn’t leave myself out), my rules (which you should know by now) are here.

For the ever inquisitive the word count is (a little over by) 514 (with the title it is 518).  Enjoy!

ONCE-UPON-A-TIME

Once-upon-a-time…

Lyn

I always thought bedtime stories were made-up fantasies for kids.  Make-believe as some adults would say…  So, I never questioned it –not until today.  Today I sit on a dust-ridden couch in a dark, dank room which smells of some vile, putrid fragrance which I care not to ponder too much on or else, I may just gag until my death comes  –it’s my room they say; I know better, I know how their lies fall freely, I know what this is and where I am.  This is not my home -damn my alter-ego for tricking me and placing me here; a re-occurring nightmare which I plan to end –I have hopes and dreams –I will find my way back to where I came from.

…in a world where two worlds existed independently of the other; opposites to a point they were identical –yin and yang in some respects; mirroring each other but worlds apart; a collision course set-in-motion, adventure in the air; our heroes, Lyn cursed Glyn for what he stole…and he for what she ignored…

Glyn

Serves her right for being so naive in her fluffy-white clouds, dreams of meeting her prince in some lame tower –it was all too simple, not a trick –she was willing it to be true –and for my part, it was; I am a man –maybe not of prince material, but a man at least.  There was a tower –well a lighthouse if I must be exact –but a tower nonetheless.  I will not be guilt-ridden for making her wishes come true!  She saw her prince and now she can wait some more; I have no plans to return back to my rancid cell-of-a-room –she can have that all to herself, after all it had been created from the impact of her decisions in this world –now it’s my time to reap the benefits –not wallow in leftover scraps from her royal highness!

…Two worlds, where one makes decisions and the other accepts the options left with no choice –a world where their actions are shadowed by the decision-maker, a world where their voice cannot be heard…

Glyn

Who does she think she –the Queen?

I have a right mind to-

A lesson she needs and a lesson she shall get –there are rules to abide by, she should know –everyone knows; if there isn’t there should be, I’ll instil it if I must and then I’ll make sure the rules stick.

…a world where the silent voices fights back…

Lyn

I need to find that lighthouse where…-if I get my hands on Glyn I’ll give him a piece of my mind!  I never thought I would be part of a tale –the tale of the ‘Distant Worlds’ where I am Trinity and he is Neo; a tale I’ve read a million times –how did I get here?  How did I end up as a story, how did I fail to read the signs?

“Day 164: Cozied Up” by Snugg LePup (Image sourced through: Flickr)

…where the rules become stories, where stories become real and where reality is questionable by all except you…

The End.

It’s really bizarre how this story kind of unintentionally wove these challenges together(ish) on its own (not much planning here); some may be more visible than others (brownie points if you can spot them in the story).  So the million dollar/sterling (doesn’t have the same ring now does it?) question is, how did I fare?  Yay or nay?  Any places to improve on?

Do you take part in flash fictions?  Where can we read them?  How and why did you start?

My Pest Pet Hates

Frivolous Fun Friday:

Hello!  Hello!  Hello! :D

This is a rather quick hello and taraaaaaa -mainly because I want to tie together some loose ends with the flash fiction I am writing and want it ready for Saturday.  This means I am sacrificing Fridays post by switching it with Saturday -oooer I hear some complaints *looks around and whistles into the air* -okay okaaaay a quick fun ramble I can do…

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

Let the Fun Begin…

I have a pet hate -I’m not a fan of insects/bugs of any kind -I know they have their uses; spiders catch flies, worms make the soil healthy, bees pollinate etc but what’s the deal with wasps?  Seriously, they must be one of the dumbest insects out there -why?  Well let’s see, how can I explain it clearly…  How many of you have had moments when a wasp has entered through an open window -my case usually my bedroom window -though the other day it was the kitchen window and I’m certain the wasp had been in the kitchen longer than that one day -too lazy to go home!  And how many of you have stood in that room trying to encourage it to leave by the same entrance they came in from -you see where I am going with this?  Yep -I have known myself to open the window to its widest to provide it an easy access out, but for the love of all things beautiful this wasp either a) refuses to acknowledge the safe route back outside b) thinks it’s highly amusing tormenting me by giving me false hopes, or my personal favourite c) they are just dumb plain and simple!  Tell me why why why and how how how can such a huge escape route can take a good hour or more to reach, when all it has to do is move towards it, rather than pitifully miss it by mere inches!  *shakes head in dismay*  The things I have to put up with…

Do you have similar rants?  Care to share with us -go on just make my day -I’d like to think I’m not alone with this particular moan *smiles encouragingly* :)

Sabotage the Community – Sabotage your Work

*Stop Press News*

Before continuing with the actual post, I have some exciting news to share with you:  I have been blessed with being interviewed by Mindi Anderson over at meanderfit.com -aptly titled ‘Ozlem Yikici – The London Novelist‘, if you want to find out how the interview went please pop over to Mindi’ blog and have a read -as well as a wander…

My ROW80 Update will follow the article below –scroll down to the end if you do not want to read the next bit (I won’t take any offence –well, I’ll try not to :P ).

*Continue*

Just a quick note:  I apologise for the silence -I’ve had a tough couple of weeks with low moods and then I was encouraged to mingle with family and friends and babysit Ava therefore; I have been away from my novel, my blog and the social media circuit.  Whilst I was away, I hoped my first article back would be on a positive note (about developments on yikici) but I had to speak, silence in a time like this is not good to anyone, here’s my voice, here’s my thoughts…

SABOTAGE THE COMMUNITY – SABOTAGE YOUR WORK

It has been over a week since the chaos hit the streets of London and then the rest of the UK…  As I sat safe indoors, these were the thoughts that transpired…

I sit in front of my laptop (yes I have solved the issue with the broken adaptor); I listen to the sound of the police sirens as they drive past through the streets, in pursuit, in preparation; I hear the helicopter up above, tracking, reporting; I feel helpless…  Will a repeat of last night endure or will our Police force prevail…  There are plenty of speculations, some have hope, others do not…  Is this where humanity has come to -a bunch of youths demolishing, uprooting people’s livelihood -communities trashed, local businesses ruined and homes burned…  I ask why…?

I never thought I’d see a day when such violence could violate our streets, our communities; it was like a free-for-all -no rhyme, no reason -although there are others who would have you believe otherwise…where do you stand, what are your thoughts?  This topic is vast and may have many underlining reasons behind it and for this purpose; it needs to be discussed to be understood –if possible.  This is a tough subject to analyse and for the purpose of this blog I will look at it from an alternative artistic angle as well as it’s gritty form.  In some odd ways this has made me think about how we; as artists, writers -creative-beings, how we sabotage our own works -be it intentional or not and with this in mind I plan to tackle this vast, macabre topic and try to mirror it with how we bring that into our works and possibly into our lives.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

When the news of the rioters hit the screens, I immediately thought it being a little too ironic; what with Rupert Murdoch, the Government and our Police force being questioned.  I may have come up with a million and one conspiracy theories in that small space of time (ok maybe I’m exaggerating that a wee bit –possibly a million theories :P ).  It was highly amusing to note that the three key figures, who were needed to address the country and tackle the problem at large, were on annual leave (holiday) and it was uncanny that our Police force seemed outnumbered against the unruly youths.  These alone just prompted questions in my mind as I watched various parts of London ransacked, demolished and/or go up in smoke.  This all happened as the nation watched.  There were various accounts through the media (and reliable sources I know) that certain communities came together and chased the rioters off their streets.  Dalston saw a group of Turkish and Kurdish men (young and old) guard their shops/restaurants; Green Street’ Muslim residents said enough is enough as the time for breaking their fast came (it’s the month of Ramadan), they stood firm –the yobs did not linger.  By day three of the riots all three key figures returned to the UK and the Police force was strengthened –soon the calm came.  With it a beautiful sense of community sprung up; they call themselves Riot Clean Up (follow them on twitter @riotcleanup or their hashtag #riotcleanup).  A bunch of volunteers took it on themselves to organise a clean up where needed –a tear came to my eye when I heard; kudos to all who took part and still are spending valuable time in maintaining it.  From the chaos a calm settled, from the grim a glorious day -my only hope is that this will get better as I cannot see how this will fare if it gets out of hand.

SABOTAGE THE COMMUNITY

‘We’re getting back our taxes’ they said to bystanders/reporters as they trashed their neighbourhood; did they not think of the local independent businesses who would suffer from the damage they’ve caused –not to mention who would be pocketing the price of their mayhem.  If only ‘getting tax back’ was that simple –I am certain there would have been more riots if it was the case, but sadly it is not and in the end taxpayers will be forking out extra to meet the extra expenses.  It angers me, it really does; I understand that maybe some –or maybe the vast majority of communities have been affected by the budget cuts; youth clubs and social enterprises for youngsters has been withdrawn, university fees have rocketed to unmentionable amounts of money; all this does not condone what they did.  The more I think about it the more it seems like an act of opportunists jumping in, to riot, loot and rampage.  Acting like yobs is not a way forward; all this has done is cause fear in some communities and create a negative impact on independent businesses.  What part of this is an admirable feat?  It saddens me that our children are part of this ugly episode; they still fight against the police, our society and us.  Where they believe they attacked the Government and hindered the tax system –they, in actual-fact, sabotaged our communities and hindered our growth in this slow economic farce.  Not to mention how this will affect their family, friends and themselves.

To this day Police sirens can still be heard and it seems that it will continue like so for some time.

Here are some interesting links I’ve stumbled across whilst I was researching information on the riots: British use Social Media to Coordinate Riot Clean Up, Muslims Defend London During London Riots, Communities Rally for Riot Clean Up, The Guardian’ Blog on the Riots, Turks police own district amid rioting.

SABOTAGE YOUR WORK

Copyright © Ozlem Yikici 2011 & Copyright © doodllz™ 2011. All Rights Reserved.

The act of sabotage is a nasty bit of work –especially the intentional kind like I’ve mentioned above, but what about the unintentional ones –the ones subconsciously created by you…  You know, when you’ve written over 10,000 words on your novel and abruptly decide it is pants and so you throw it in the bin –or, like me, you take up a painting project and become annoyed that a part of the painting does not work, so you decide to trash it (see examples above and below -brownie points for those who notice the apt ‘The End’ sign?).  This also can be evident in your life, your relationships, your business, your career –how many times have you ruined it and thought ‘ooops my mistake’.  We are prone to sabotage all aspects of our lives and works –even our health.  Think of what you may have sabotaged or witnessed as acts of sabotages and let us know your findings.

ROW80 UPDATE

I have been extremely bad since my last update and not achieved much (just this post –it’s over 1,500 words so I guess that counts for something).  I have decided I will create a ROW80 page under the Social Interactions tab and organise my goals there.  For the time being I will stick to my goals as planned and any adjustments I make I will make public this Sunday (hopefully).  I hope the rest of you ROW80 stars are doing a better job than me –keep the good works going!  :)

ROW80 Update -it’s Slow, but I’m getting there

Thursday’s Topical Tête-à-Tête:

Apologies no Topical Tête-à-Tête’s today -I’m feeling a little under the weather -if I feel any better towards the end of the day I may finish writing it and post it for you to read -I want to do the topic (the riots in the UK) justice and not post a mediocre piece of writingApologies again, I hope to be forgiven.

ROW80 Update:

As promised on Sunday, here I am with an extensive update from my last update a few weeks ago.  There’s not too much to update from a ROW80 point of view -other than life got in the way since then…  My laptop went on the blink shortly after that post (see this blog post for a detailed account), I resorted back to the trusted notepad and pen -to jot down ideas, to continue with Becoming (it was difficult at times).  Then on August 6th 2011 the adaptor for my laptop arrived and I was back in action -well, I embarked on my self-hosting project.  This took up all my available time so my writing paused dramatically :( -I did write blog posts in between and approx 50-500 words per week on my WIPs (which I should not moan about -but I am truly annoyed with myself!  I should have done better.)  As you can see the new website is up and running (still tweaking here and there), this means I am able to concentrate on my WIP.  Since Sunday I have managed to write 1000 words on Becoming (which is not bad if you consider Sunday and Monday my days off and also the fact that I’ve had a couple of days with low moods).  I am having one of those days today but I refuse to let it faze me too much -I hope to snap out of it so I can finish the article on the UK riots; encouragements may help…  This is my update so far.  I leave this update on having completed 16,774 words on Becoming.  *let’s pray more words are added by the next update*

Upcoming Plans & Schedule:  If I complete my topical article today then please pop by to read it by midnight today, if not I hope to have a little something for Saturday’s Showcase Sketches with a ROW80 Update, guest blogger Patrick Tully will be back on Sunday with another engaging article and I will be back on Monday or Wednesday with another post and schedule updates.

Challenge Issued: Transparent Tapestries (A Reminder)

Tuesday’s Triptych Tapestry

For all you Flash Fiction enthusiasts, here’s a challenge for you to sink your teeth into.  Two weeks has passed since I issued this challenge, you have another two weeks to think of a delightful tale to share with us, we look forward to your entry.  Please see below for further details.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

The rules are quite simply this:

“Being an artist at heart, I have decided my triptych prompts will be based with an art theme running through it.  The prompts will have three parts to it:

  • Painting/Photography by an Artist
  • Random lines of Poetry by Poets
  • An Art Movement/Writing Genre

I will endeavour to select the above through the methods used by surrealist automatism (this will involve selecting imagery by opening books/webpage’s in a random manner).  You can choose any of the given prompts -or if you are brave and up to a challenge then use all three prompts!  The choice is yours.  Word count will be limited to 500-1000 (if it is slightly less or more I will not quibble).

If there are artists who feel inspired to take part with imagery or any poets who want to enter with poems -you too can join in -hey why not make it a mixed media piece!

Please ensure you provide the link to your entry in the comments of the appropriate post or allow for a pingback so we can track your entry for reading as well as for collating in the next Flash Fiction Challenge.”

In honour of our busy schedules, I will keep the challenge open for a month.  I hope this gives you enough time to ponder on possible creative works.  May your muse inspire you always…

Your three prompts for the next four weeks are as follows:

Image sourced from: http://fineartamerica.com/

  • Three lines of poetry:

Roof turned transparent

And prismatic, focusing

That warm, floating lantern’s glow

-Lighthouse by Gerard Woodward

  • Art Movement: Purism and here is another explanation of Purism / as for the Writing Genre; I have decided to give you the artistic reign again (so ultimately it’s your choice).

*If you are looking to enter with a Poem or a Visual Image then the word count is not applicable (having said that; fellow Poets, if you are generous with your words then maybe keep in mind to not over-exceed the maximum word allowance).

Well that’s the rules, the deadline is at midnight GMT on 29th August 2011 (I will be collating all entries in the next Triptych Tapestry which is scheduled to be posted 30th August 2011).

Enjoy and above all have fun!

Savvy Sunday Salutations:

(ROW80 Update can be found towards the end of the post.)

Hellooooo there!  Miss me at all?  :P   I thought I’d break the long silence with a savvy Sunday salutation to all you lovely readers out there.  I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying life and embracing it with a heart full of love.  :D   I have been trying to do that but mostly I’ve been kept on my toes with the new blog (most of the major modifications are completed -now the fiddly bits are left for me to lull over -ho hum…).  Seeing the worst is over I thought I’d let you all pop by and have a peek (work-in-progress is always fun so I wanted to share this experience with you too :) ).  I’d love to hear what you think of the modifications and what works and what does not etc…  I also want to say a HUGE thank you to Ian (see this post for a reminder on who Ian is).  He has had to put up with a lot of indecisiveness from moi -and my mood changes (there has been a few) -but we finally got there and this venture would not have been possible without his input soooooo THANK YOU Ian –I really appreciate your help.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

I’ve added a few new bits in the sidebar on the right (I’m sure you have already noticed):

  • There are progress monitor bars (one for the modification of the blog, the other my novel-in-progress), if you want to check in my progress those would be a good indication to let you know how I’m fairing at a glance.
  • There are subscribe (to rss/feedburner feeds)/connect/follow buttons.
  • If the dark theme is too much (that does not have to be the only reason) but still want to keep updated with new posts/articles/news from yikici then you can subscribe via the email option.

I have added a redirection to the old website so any of you who are trying to access it will notice they will be finding themselves at the new site (so welcome back!) :D

ROW80 Update:

This is a very brief update, as I have not had time to work on my novel(s) due to a variety of factors (I will give a full account mid-week).  Having said that a new story idea has popped into my mind so I wrote it down (yes my laptop was not working so I went back to my trusted pen and notepad –my laptop was back in action last week Saturday *yay*).  I ended up writing an outline of about 7 A5 pages (which I’m pleased about) and I also wrote 2 A4 pages on becoming so that’s not bad either considering the mayhem I have been going through since my last ROW80 update.   I leave this update on having completed 15,774 words of my novel –let’s see if that number changes in the next update I will be giving.  *Trying to stay positive*

Upcoming Plans & Schedule:  I plan to have the next post out on Tuesday (a reminder for those who already know the schedule) and following that a topical discussion is scheduled for Thursday (upcoming plans for the next few days will be mentioned at the bottom of Thursdays post).  A ROW80 Update will be made available either on Wednesday or on Thursday; I’ll see how things pan out.  That’s me for now, I have to dash…  Keep smiling! :D   Stay in peace…

yikici… The Next Few Weeks…

Thursday’s Topical Tête-à-Tête:

Firstly, I want to apologise for the delay of this post and it’s shortness (there is a very good and valid reason).  As some of you may already know my laptop has been out of action for a few days now and therefore, I have been unable to work on the article I was hoping to share with you today.  My laptop is still not in a working state (I have braved using my rather old slow PC *hopes it does not crash just yet*), my posts and communications are likely to be not as frequent until this problem is solved (I am working on it and hopefully there won’t be too much delay).  In the meantime I have some good news:  I have mentioned it many times before and finally I have taken action -I will be going self-hosted soon (2-3 weeks at the most); I will keep you posted when the actual change takes place (promise I will).  In the meantime I have noted that (despite exporting the whole blog content over to the new host) details of subscribers to this blog do not get transferred over (I know it is a HUGE pain!).  Therefore (if you lovely readers still want to stay updated with the posts/articles); when the switch is made (I will post details of the new website etc when the time comes) please re-subscribe.  Patience is a virtue they say, I do hope your patience with yikici is rewarded graciously on our full return when the laptop is back in force and so is the new site with its brand new host.  Whilst I am on the topic of the new blog; if you would like to share any thoughts to any changes you would like to see, now would be a good time to let me know.  I look forward to hearing from you.

I do hope what I have written above makes sense (I have a headache and am extremely tired, please accept my apologies if it’s garbled -tell me if it is *prays its not*).

Tuesday’s Triptych Tapestry

One month has passed by since I issued my second Flash Fiction Challenge Triptych Trials; it was fab to see and read all the entries (you guys have done swell with the prompts given *cheers*).  Those of you who have not managed to catch up with these delightful stories then please take a break and head on over to have a read.  These brave soul(s) rose to the challenge:

  • Billie Jo Woods’ entry Defying Gravity swept me off my feet -no really!
  • Sonia G. Medeiros had me on the edge of my seat as I read Paper Aeroplanes -gripping to say the least.
  • Me, Myself & I -I’ll let you decide what you think of my entry St Pauls at High Tide -it was a joy to write.

Thank you both for taking part -I hope you enjoyed the creative journey. :D

Radical Honesty & Relationships – An Addendum

Savvy Sunday Salutations:

Welcome to another week with guest blogger Patrick Tulley; last week‘s discussions were so engaging that Patrick decided to post an addendum this week; it certainly opens up the discussion in more detail.  I still believe that honesty is the best policy, what are your thoughts?  I hope you find this an interesting read as I have.  We look forward to your comments.

(As always, there is a pdf document at the bottom of the post for those who may find this a difficult read.)

RADICAL HONESTY & RELATIONSHIPS – AN ADDENDUM

Several commenters’s brought up some interesting points in last week’s post that I thought were worth attaching as an addendum this week. In many ways these points have been reflected in a few of my previous posts, but a little more detail regarding ‘radical honesty’ I felt would be useful in tying them altogether more coherently. What’s interesting is that this addendum is now longer than my original post. Anyway, I hope it explains any discrepancies that you may have had with last week’s post.

1 – Obligations

‘Honesty is the best policy’

We have all heard the expression above, but what is it suggesting? Well for the most part it is saying honesty by definition is a virtuous act. But is it really? Cannot dishonesty be virtuous too? In order for a philosophical concept to work, it is first required to be consistent. I believe I can prove this from a philosophical perspective myself. This is also, where we touch on the more ethical nature of our choices to be honest or not. I hope it makes sense.

Honesty accepts that you have an obligation to be honest. However, the obligations we are faced with may well have been either ‘unchosen’ or a ‘chosen’ one. There is an important distinction between them in order for us to best understand our decision whether to be honest or dishonest.

Negative Unchosen Obligation

Much like the analogy, I made with the murderer and my story about skipping school. Both parties are faced with an obligation to be honest that was forced upon them. The murderer demands to know where your wife is so he can commit an act of violence against someone you love. Sending the murderer in the opposite direction would be considered both dishonest and virtuous simultaneously, insofar as you would be averting an act of violence against another. Unless the murderer is directly threatening the husband, then it would be hard to accept their decision to tell the truth as virtuous, if they sent him the correct way.

Regarding my choice to lie about skipping school, whilst it may share some similarities with the murderer analogy, there are some core differences. Firstly, I was forced to go to school, whether I wanted to or not. The obligation was imposed on me from the start. My choice whether I went to school or not cannot be considered either as virtuous or un-virtuous, since this would be merely my preference in deciding whether I went to school or not. However, when I chose to lie about my whereabouts that day in order to stave off some physical punishment, my dishonesty can be viewed as a virtuous act. Why? Well, whilst I have no positive obligation to go to school, other than my fear of punishment, my dishonesty averted a violent act against me. Wherever coercion is being applied to obligate us to tell the truth then there is nothing virtuous in telling them the truth. The person coercing us into truth telling is nothing more than a mugger demanding our wallet.

Positive Chosen Obligation

These are the obligations that we choose for ourselves. They are obligations for which responsibilities are placed upon us by choice. The important difference to the previous obligation is that we ‘choose’ these responsibilities; they are not forced upon us. If I choose to work for an employer and decide to skip a day from work without informing them, then they have a right to ask me where I was, since we both agreed to my coming into work at a certain time. Whilst I could lie and say, I was lost at sea or in an accident unable to reach them by phone. My decision to lie can be viewed as un-virtuous, since I decided to lie about something I had positively chosen to abide by. If I tell my employer the truth that I just didn’t feel like coming in and my employer decides to fire me, then he is perfectly within his rights according to the contract we both agreed to. It would be their choice, since I was the one that broke the agreement. Similarly, as one of last week’s commenter’s suggested, if I elect to own a pet, then I am obliged to feed it and give them some ability to exercise. If I decide to not feed that animal, then I am responsible for its subsequent dying of hunger.

Children

Perhaps the most important positive obligation we can give ourselves is to have children. This subject probably deserves a whole blog post of its own, but I will attempt to condense it for this particular post.  Our relationship with our children whilst entirely chosen by the parent is an unchosen one for the child. We’ve all heard a teenager complain to a parent, ‘I never chose to be born’. Well, it’s true, they didn’t. Perhaps they would have preferred some other persons to be their parents. This means that parents have a special responsibility to their children, insofar as they need to recognise their children’s ‘unchosen’ obligation to them.  It requires an exceptional kind of care that you may not apply to other relationships in your life. This is because they are very vulnerable for at least the first 16 to 18 years of their life and wholly reliant on the parent to protect them. This relationship effectively trumps all others because of this unique responsibility.

2 – Appropriate honesty

This was an interesting question raised in last week’s comments thread. It raised the issue of how much honesty should we give a person at the beginning of a relationship. Opening up the most vulnerable parts about yourself can be viewed as inappropriate before levels of realistic trust have been formed between them. I completely agree with this, but I wouldn’t suggest that this kind of honesty was ‘radical’; it merely reflects a dysfunction in that person and most likely a display of ‘un-met’ needs, which I will come to in a moment. Radical honesty is about understanding your own feelings as much as the other. It requires empathic skills to decide whether this new person is actually worthy of your complete honesty. For instance if I decide to engage with someone I have knowingly seen to be aggressive and irrational and I express some doubts about their behaviour, then I am likely to experience some great hostility from them. Likewise, if I decide to share my most innermost thoughts with someone I only just met, I can hardly be surprised if they then go and tell others about them. These are all signs of a lack of empathy, which probably stem from neglect that some of us experienced as children. Honesty is risky and should only be shared with those that have proved themselves to be trustworthy.

Un-met Needs

These are needs that children desire as they grow up, such as care, empathy, understanding and truth. If some of these were missing in your childhood, then it’s highly likely you will look for people that mirrored your experience as a child; in the unconscious hope they will finally meet those needs for you. Generally this often means you approach relationship building in a dysfunctional way and rather than having those un-met needs being satisfied, they are often more likely to be compounded further.

3 – Culture

I touched on this two weeks ago in Relationships, Friendship & Attraction. There are a lot of myths that surrounds how we approach our relationships and indeed how we hold onto them. We have all seen the endless movies with the guy getting the girl at the very end against all adversity. Culture has endless quotes that seemingly show relationships as this kind of fantastical adventure.

Love will conquer all

Unconditional love

Friendship is forever

Soul mate

Love is often given some mythological status, as if it doesn’t really require any earning and is found more by luck than by judgement. Often these cultural references only serve to hinder and compound dysfunctional behaviour in us. This is why as a philosopher I am always wary of culture and which is why you should be also.

There is a lot more I could say on this subject and indeed, I will in the weeks to come. What constitutes a healthy relationship I feel are generally our ‘shared values’. What those values are exactly I will certainly be discussing in a later post. For now I hope that both this week and last week’s post go a long way into giving you a better understanding of what I have described as ‘radical honesty’. I would also like to thank Joey, Ozlem and Lori for their contribution to this week’s post. As always, the very best of luck to you all.

PATRICK TULLEY: PHILOSOPHER, AMATEUR WRITER

My name is Patrick Tulley. I am primarily a philosopher and an amateur writer but also have been a painter and sculptor in the past.  My background has been quite varied, as I have lived abroad on and off during my 20′s, been in a number of different professions throughout my life. More recently, I have been working as a private consultant within the public sector.

Since philosophy is my preferred interest; it is always something I rigorously apply to all my thinking and writing. Whilst I am knowledgeable about abstract philosophy, I am not particularly interested in taking that route.  Philosophy is about the search for truth, it was always meant to be understandable by everyday people -this does not mean dumbing down the ideas of course.  It just means I do not allow myself to get sidetracked by too many inconsequential arguments, often referred to as lifeboat scenarios.  I tend towards the more Aristotelian and Socratic methods of philosophy, but I also have interests in Hume, Nietzsche and Rand.  Philosophy has been a wonderful and fulfilling part of my life; it’s often been a very misunderstood subject -which I hope to discuss in future posts.  I also enjoy reviewing art, literature, music and passing comments on culture, news and personal experiences that I have found both interesting and enlightening.  I do not have a particular interest in politics –however; I may discuss my reasons with you sporadically throughout this blog.  Overall, this is hoped to be a journal about a philosophical life.  I hope you will enjoy my outlook on things and look forward to hearing your comments and thoughts along the way. I would also like to thank Ozlem for giving me this opportunity to have a voice on her blog.

Disclaimer; whilst we (guest bloggers and I) do not set about to intentionally upset visitors to the site; I understand some of the topics discussed/raised may touch nerves.  Please note I will do my utmost to screen these posts before I post them however; I do believe in freedom of speech and I would hate to limit someone because they think differently to me or have different values from mine.  Therefore, I urge you to have some understanding and an open mind before jumping in and causing a scene without it being constructive.  Like I said, Patrick and I do have difference of opinions and on most cases we agree to disagree but at the same time we also respect the others’ thoughts and views -after all we do live in a civilized world; with this in mind I hope we will have more cultivated and engaging discussions.  One last note to all:  Here on yikici I have aimed to keep posts and discussions clean; I am not a fan of words that are disrespectful and disparaging therefore, I will not condone its’ use here on yikici; I do hope you share my views on this –if not, at least can respect them.
